August 12, 2008 Phillies 7, Dodgers 2

Double digits hits again for the fourth straight game, with Chase Utley knocking in three runs. Two of those are on a double as part of a 4 run 6th inning which ices the 7th straight victory for the team and gives Cole Hamels his sixth straight victory and team leading 11th win. The Phillies have finally caught fire winning 10 of their last 13 games, but with two of the three best NL teams in their division still have a bit of ground to make up. 8 1/2 games behind Atlanta in the division, and 8 behind the Mets for the wild card.

Chase Utley had 2 base hits and 3 RBI as the sizzling Philadelphia Phillies
defeated the Los Angeles(NL) Dodgers by a score of 7 to 2 at Dodger
Stadium.

Cole Hamels(11-5) pitched well for Philadelphia in their victory. He was
reached for 7 hits and 1 walk in 7 innings. Philadelphia banged out 10 hits
on the night.

Clayton Kershaw(4-8) was the loser. Philadelphia won for the 7th straight
time.

August 12, 2008 Red Sox 7, Rangers 1

Taking a look at the hits, which are even at 9 apiece, you would think this game would be much closer than the final score indicates. In reality, it was. Charlie Zink's major league debut goes off without a hitch as he does his part, only allowing one run through 5 innings of work. But, he sufferes from lack of help from his teammates as Rangers starter Scott Feldman was carrying a 3-hit shutout at the end of 5 innings. Justin Masterson takes over in the top of the 6th, and in the bottom of the inning the Sox explode against six Texas pitchers sending 11 men to the plate and scoring all 7 of their runs. Warren Madrigal stops the bleeding and holds the Sox scoreless over the final 2 2/3 innings of the game. Masterson will get credit for the win, his first in relief, and David Aardsma and Hideki Okajima finish up.

Despite the Rangers fairly mediocre won-loss record they have held first place in the AL West since mid-May, at one time leading the division while being 5 games below the .500 mark. The loss today and a win for the Angels puts Texas and L.A. in a tie for the division lead. The Angels have made up a 6 1/2 game defecit over the last month.

At Fenway Park the Texas Rangers were battered 7 to 1 by the Boston Red
Sox.

Boston scored all of the necessary runs in the 6th inning when they exploded
for 7 runs on 5 hits. The big moment was provided by David Ortiz who made
the Boston fans a happy lot when he popped a two-run clout over the fence.
Both teams finished the game with 9 hits.

Justin Masterson(6-1) got the win allowing no runs in 2 innings. Scott
Feldman(7-3) was given the loss. He allowed 2 runs and 5 hits in 5 innings.

August 11, 2008 Phillies 4, Dodgers 2

The Phils travel out west to Chavez Ravine for the first game of the year against the Dodgers, and for the third straight game they get double digit hits. Today though, despite 14 hits only 4 men can cross the plate but it is enough for a season best 6th straight victory. Kyle Kendrick gets his third solid start in a row for a win, and the bullpen handles the rest.

Quite a few familiar faces between the Pirates series and this one, with Brandon Moss and Craig Hansen along with my former Phillie pinch-hit master Jason Michaels seeing action for Pittsburgh and former Soxer Derek Lowe getting the loss today for L.A. And of course, who can forget Manny Ramirez. So far for the Dodgers in 10 games, Manny is batting .359 but with only one homerun and one RBI.

by the score of 4 to 2.

Philadelphia jumped on top of Los Angeles(NL) in the 5th inning plating an
isolated run using 2 hits. Philadelphia had 14 hits overall, while Los
Angeles(NL) had 6.

Kyle Kendrick(5-11) got the win allowing 2 runs in 5 innings. Kendrick was
helped out by Brad Lidge who recorded his 25th save. Derek Lowe(11-9) was
the loser. He got hit hard, allowing 11 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings.

August 11, 2008 White Sox 2, Red Sox 0

Josh Beckett pitches great, but an all too familiar scene this year sends him to his 10th loss of the season - no run support. This is the fourth time this year that Beckett has allowed three runs or less and gotten a loss to show for it. His 3.73 run support is almost a run lower than the next lowest on the team, which is Jon Lester. They are the only two Sox starters with run support less than 5.00, with Daisuke Matsuzaka leading the major leagues in run support at 6.50. Jason Marquis of the Cubs has a run support of 6.00, he and Dice-K are the only pitchers over 6. Bobby Jenks gets his 33rd save, second in the AL behind Mariano Rivera's 40 saves.

As for the game, Jim Thome strikes again with a solo homerun off of Beckett in the 4th inning for all the runs Chicago would need. Jacoby Ellsbury does his part, running rampant on the bases with three steals, however after stealing second and third in one inning Dustin Pedroia lines into a doubleplay with Ellsbury doubled off of third base. Ellsbury would be the only Boston runner to get as far as third base today.

At US Cellular Field, the Chicago (AL) faithful were treated to an intriguing
pitcher's duel. John Danks(11-4) finally bested his Boston counterpart, Josh
Beckett(6-10), by the score of 2 to 0.

Boston was unable to recover after Chicago (AL) went ahead in the 4th inning
scoring a single run. Boston went down without a fight in the 9th.

Danks got relief help from Bobby Jenks who gained credit for his 33rd save.
Beckett was tagged with the loss. He pitched 7 innings and surrendered just
4 hits and 1 walk.

The Chicago (AL) ballclub's record now stands at a division leading 73-45.
With the loss Boston now has a record of 70-49.

August 10, 2008 Phillies 12, Pirates 5

The Phils excel in all offensive aspects as they score double digits, rip out 14 hits off of six Pittsburgh pitchers and beat the Pirates for a sweep of the series. Ryan Howard bangs out 3 hits, while Jimmy Rollins and Jayson Werth each drive in three runs. Rollins, Werth and Geoff Jenkins each knock one over the fence, and Shane Victorino steals two bases to give him 30 steals on the season. Former Soxer Brandon Moss drove in two of the Pirates runs and had two hits, including a homerun.

In a lop-sided win the Philadelphia Phillies offense put up 4 runs on the
scoreboard in the 4th inning and ripped the league door-mat Pittsburgh
Pirates by a 12 to 5 count.

Philadelphia scored 4 runs in the 4th inning with the help of 6 hits. The key
offensive moment was provided by Chase Utley who made the home-town crowd a
happy bunch when he banged out a single scoring two baserunners.
Philadelphia had many opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6
separate innings.

Jamie Moyer(10-9) went 6 and 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Jason
Davis(0-1) absorbed the loss. He allowed 8 hits and 2 walks in 4 innings.

August 10, 2008 White Sox 7, Red Sox 6

The long ball can be your friend, and it can also be your enemy. David Ortiz puts two into the seats and Jason Bay tosses in a homer while the Red Sox bust out to a 6-3 lead off of former Phillie Gavin Floyd. But, Chicago can also swing a mean bat (they lead the majors in homeruns at 181), with all of their scoring today coming off homers. Orlando Cabrera rips a 3-run shot in the 3rd and Jim Thome takes Paps deep in the bottom of the 8th for a 3-run blast of his own to tie the game 6-6. Paps sails through the 9th and stays in for the 10th, but after getting an out Carlos Quentin takes him deep for a walk-off homer.

Only the third blown save for Papelbon on the year in 25 chances, and the two homers allowed by him today in 1 2/3 innings doubles his season total of homers allowed as he had allowed just two in almost 45 innings previously. So he isn't Mr. Automatic after all, we can't all be perfect. :)

Boston Red Sox in 10 innings by a score of 7 to 6 at US Cellular Field.

The score was tied at 6 after nine. Chicago (AL) won the game in the 10th
inning. After an out was recorded, Quentin blasted a solo shot making
Chicago (AL) the winners and sending the 37,160 fans home happy. Chicago
(AL) had a total of 9 hits for the game.

The win was credited to Octavio Dotel(3-3) who went 2/3 of an inning allowing
no runs. Jonathan Papelbon(6-2) ended up with the loss in relief.

August 9, 2008 Mariners 3, Rays 0

Mariners pitche Ryan Rowland-Smith has one of the more interesting starts you will see, taking a no-hitter into the 9th inning. Carl Crawford breaks up the gem by leading off the 9th with a single. At least a gem in regards to hits, as Rowland-Smith had thrown 137 pitches and walked seven batters.

At SAFECO Field, the Seattle faithful were treated to an intriguing pitcher's
duel. Ryan Rowland-Smith(3-3) finally bested his Tampa Bay counterpart, Matt
Garza(8-6), by the score of 3 to 0.

Seattle tallied 2 runs in the 3rd inning. Kenji Johjima led off the inning
for Seattle when he was hit by a pitch. Yuniesky Betancourt stepped into the
batter's box and he laced a single. Ichiro Suzuki then reached on an error.
Jeremy Reed followed and he worked the squeeze play to perfection. Raul
Ibanez came to the plate and hit a deep fly. That scoring would be all that
was needed. Seattle totaled 7 hits on the night.

J.J. Putz earned the save, his 9th. Garza absorbed the loss. He pitched 5
and 1/3 innings and surrendered 7 hits and no walks.
