July 1, 2008 Red Sox 6, Rays 1

July starts the same way that June ended for Brandon Moss, as he duplicates yesterday's feat with another 3-run homerun that put the game away. Pretty much no chance at all for the Rays today, as Wake held them to three hits into the 8th inning but 6 walks forced the relief corps to help out to preserve the shutout. Mike Lowell muffs a grounder to allow a run to score in the 8th (unearned run charged to Wakefield) that would spoil the shutout. Javier Lopez and Craig Hansen finish up. A gargantuan effort on the mound for the Rays' Matt Garza. Garza stays in for 156 pitches and a complete game in the losing effort, but did hold the Red Sox scoreless the last four innings.

The Red Sox continue to be the hottest team in baseball, winning their 9th straight game and 19th of their last 22, but still sit 3 1/2 back of Toronto in the division. They won't get a crack at the Blue Jays until August, and then two of the last 5 series of the season are home-and-home against the Jays.

Tim Wakefield carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the seemingly
unstoppable Boston Red Sox outscored the Tampa Bay Rays 6 to
1.

Wakefield(8-4) gave a fine effort for Boston. He went 7 and 1/3 innings
allowing 3 hits and 6 walks lowering his ERA to 4.57. The right-handed
Wakefield lost his no-hit bid when Jason Bartlett singled with nobody out in
the 6th inning. Boston had 9 hits for the night while Tampa Bay had 3.

Matt Garza(6-3) was given the loss. He surrendered 6 runs and 9 hits in 9
innings.

End of June standings

Despite the Red Sox's 8 straight wins, they are still in 2nd in the AL East 3 1/2 behind the Blue Jays. Toronto in fact so far has the largest improvement over their actual record to this point, at a +14. The Atlanta Braves, who in real life lost 90 games, have the biggest improvement in the NL at +11. Two AL Central teams, Minnesota and Detroit, have the biggest drops at -11 each.

For the Red Sox, their 20-7 mark for the month of June is the best record for a month for any team so far. Meanwhile, the Phillies continue to plod along and even with not getting it going yet have a difference of only -5 so far. The Nationals have the major's worst record at this time at 29-55, while the Chicago Cubs have the best at 56-27.

June 30, 2008 Red Sox 4, Rays 0

Two rookies put on a show today for the Red Sox as each have the best games of their so far short careers. Brandon Moss picks a great time to hit his first major league homerun, as he gets a hold of a Jason Shields fastball and clubs it over the fence for a 3-run bomb in the 4th after Kevin Youkilis had already knocked in a run for a four run Sox 4th inning.

The homerun wasn't even needed, as Justin Masterson puts on a show. He holds the Rays hitless until Willy Aybar singleswith one out in the 7th inning, and Carl Crawford adds a single in the 9th as Masterson goes the distance for a 2-hit shutout and his fourth straight win.

However, all is not totally good today. Dustin Pedroia cannot duplicate yesterday's hit-in-final-atbat performance, as he comes to bat in the 9th hitless so far on the day and strikes out for an 0 for 5 day, ending his hitting streak at 24 games. That will tie him with the Royals' Jose Guillen for the longest hitting streak in the majors so far this season.

Justin Masterson carried a no-hitter into the 7th inning at Tropicana Field
where the blistering-hot Boston Red Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays by the score
of 4 to 0.

Masterson(5-1) dominated Tampa Bay hitters. He didn't give up much, just 2
hits and 2 walks in 9 innings reducing his ERA from 2.98 to 2.48. The
right-handed Masterson had his no-hit bid broken up by Willy Aybar who
singled with one out in the 7th inning. Neither team managed to score after
the 4th inning.

James Shields(8-6) was the loser. Boston continued their winning ways, with
their streak now at 8 games and counting.

June 29, 2008 Rangers 3, Phillies 2

Very tough luck loss, as a nice comeback to tie and a glorious chance in the 9th to win are both wasted. Texas scored 2 quick runs in the 1st, but Jamie Moyer settles down some while solo homeruns for Jayson Werth and Chase Utley tie the score, 2-2. After the Rangers get two on to lead off the 7th on a walk and single off of a tiring Moyer, Clay Condrey induces a double play for two outs but Josh Hamilton gets a base knock to drive in the eventual winning run. A bases loaded- one out chance in the top of the 9th goes by the wayside when Pedro Feliz grounds into the 5-2-3 doubleplay to end the game on a sour note. This concludes interleague play for the Phillies, as they go 6-9 in the games against the American League.

A bunch of slumping bats isn't helping any, specifically the bat of Shane Victorino. Once one of the hottest hitters in baseball batting over .400, an 0 for 25 slump and only 6 for 60 in his last 12 games has knocked his once league leading batting average of ,403 down almost 60 points. Ryan Howard has only two homeruns in his last 10 games, and the Phillies have lost 10 of their last 15. The pitching has been there, only allowing more than 5 runs once in the last 15, but the once-potent offense has sputtered a bit. Maybe going back to the NL will shake things back into gear.

One run was the difference at Ameriquest Field as the Texas Rangers defeated
the Philadelphia Phillies 3 to 2.

Philadelphia was unable to claim the lead after Texas went ahead in the 7th
inning scoring one runner on 2 hits. Philadelphia threatened in the 9th but
Texas was able to put down the rally.

Eric Hurley(2-1) picked up the victory, allowing 2 runs in 8 innings. Eddie
Guardado got the save, his 3rd. Jamie Moyer(7-7) was the loser. He allowed
3 runs and 6 hits in 6 innings.

'Just one or two mistakes were all it took to beat us today' Gary Lucas said.
'We take these games one day at a time, but this one was hard to take.'

June 29, 2008 Red Sox 6, Astros 1

Jacoby Ellsbury leads the game off with a homer and the Sox never look back, scoring 3 in the 1st and 2 more in the 2nd to give Josh Beckett the easy win. JD Drew and Kevin Youkilis also rip balls over the fence for three Sox homeruns in the game, and Dustin Pedroia wastes no time today with a 1st inning single to extend his hitting streak to 24 games to tie Jose Guillen of Kansas City for the longest streak in the majors so far this year. 7th straight win for the Red Sox, who go into second place in the AL East with Tampa losing 3 of their last 4 games. The win also puts the Sox only 3 1/2 behind the Blue Jays (who have lost 4 straight), the closest they have been since early May.

With the interleague schedule now complete, the Red Sox will get the best record in the majors in interleague play at a very impressive 15-3. Three game sweeps against the Astros and Diamondbacks, and 2-1 over Milwaukee, the Phillies and St. Louis. If you are curious, the worst interleague record is 4-11, which belongs to two of the Sox interleague opponents Arizona nad St. Louis.

At Minute Maid Park the reeling Houston Astros were battered 6 to 1 by the
blistering-hot Boston Red Sox.

Boston jumped out to the early lead in the first inning scoring 3 runners on 3
hits. That scoring would be all that was needed. Boston had 9 hits for the
afternoon while Houston had 5.

Josh Beckett(5-6) got the win allowing 1 run in 7 innings. Brian Moehler(1-4)
absorbed the loss. With the win, Boston continued their winning ways; their
streak now stands at 7 games and counting. 'We're running on all cylinders
now', said Gary Lucas. 'I probably shouldn't change a thing and let the guys
continue to put up the wins.'

June 28, 2008 Rangers 5, Phillies 4

The Phillies jump out to a 4-0 lead, but former Phillie Marlon Byrd proves to be a royal pain in the ass as he gets 3 doubles on the day and scores a run. Even with the doubles, they don't really get involved in the scoring but Byrd is the hero when he gets a walk-off single to score the winning run through the drawn-in infield after Ryan Madson loads the bases in the bottom of the 9th.

The Rangers have led the AL West for about the last month and a half despite being below .500 most of the season, but only recently have put together some wins by winning 6 of their last 7. At one time, Texas led the division with the pathetic record of 18-23!

Milton Bradley had 4 hits as the Texas Rangers won at Ameriquest Field in
dramatic fashion over the Philadelphia Phillies, the final score, 5 to
4.

The game was won by Texas with a run in the bottom of the 9th inning. Ian
Kinsler stroked a base-hit. Michael Young followed and he laced a one-base
hit. Young took second on the throw. Josh Hamilton then drew a walk to load
the bases. Bradley came up and he slapped a base-hit giving Texas the win
much to the delight of the home town crowd. Texas had 12 hits for the game
and Philadelphia had 8.

The victory was credited to Luis Mendoza(1-1) who went 3 and 2/3 innings,
allowing 2 runs. Ryan Madson(1-4) was charged with the loss in relief. He
was unable to retire a batter allowing 3 hits and 1 walk.

June 28, 2008 Red Sox 5, Astros 3

Once again all position starters get in on the sction with at least a hit with the exception of Jason Varitek. Dustin Pedroia was almost on that list, but in the top of the 9th with his 22 game hitting streak in jeopardy he lashes a base hit in his final atbat of the game to extend the streak to 23. Ty Wigginto smokes a 2-run homer in the 9th off of Javier Lopez after Javier had pitched a spotles 8th, so Paps comes in to retire the final two batters for his 15th save of the season.

Sixth straight win for the Sox for a season high winning streak, and have won16 of their last 19.

mid-season Phillie stats

At the halfway point of the season, the Phillies are still trying to get things in gear. Spurts of good, spurts of bad, all that combined still leave them at a dissapointing 3 games below .500 and 4 games worse than their actual record at this point. The season's second half should prove to be better.

Since this one will come up first in the blog, the mid-season Red Sox and Nationals stats follow this.
