June 15, 2008 Red Sox 8, Reds 2

Josh Beckett gets back on the winning track getting some run support at last after he only had one win in the last two months despite quite a few solid starts. Jacoby Ellsbury, JD Drew, Jason Varitek and Julio Lugo hit homers in the rout. For Lugo, his second homerun in three games after having a homerless season up to the beginning of this series.

Speaking of getting back on the winning track, ob boy is Tim Redding of the Nationals some happy right now. Redding allowed only one run in 8 2/3 innings today for a victory against the Mariners, his first win in over a month after the most up and down season so far. In Redding's first 8 starts of the season he was 3-2 with an ERA of 2.91. Since then, in the 6 starts up to this one he went 0-3 with a sky-high 10.42 ERA along with giving up 13 homeruns in those 6 starts to put his overall ERA for the season up by almost three runs. With the win today, overall Redding on the season is 4-5 and a 5.18 ERA.

June 14, 2008 Cardinals 4, Phillies 0

The Phillies can't get anything going against ex-teammate Kyle Lohse as Lohse scatters 5 singles and comes within one out of a complete game shutout. The final hit that put runners on first and second in the 9th for the Phils that spelled the end of Lohse's day was a single for Ryan Howard, which extends Howard's hitting streak to a fairly impressive 16 games. Yorbert Molina for the Reds falls a triple shy of the cycle with a single, double and homerun.

Lohse wasn't a Phillie for very long anyway. He came to the team in a trade on July 31, 2007 and became a free agent on October 31, so he was only a Phillie for about three months officially.

June 14, 2008 Red Sox 5, Reds 4

Jay Bruce of the Reds, in the bottom of the 9th with a runner on base against Jonathan Papelbon, blasts one over the fence for a two-run walk-off homer and a Reds comeback victory - that is what the box score honestly should read. Cincinnati is a 1-18 homerun park, and when the N rated Bruce gets a ballpark homer chance off of Paps my heart dropped. But, the split card comes up a 20 and it is just a long fly out. WHEW!!!

Tim Wakefield holds the Reds hitless until pinch-hitter Jolbert Cabrera singles with one out in the 6th, but in the 7th Wake falls apart as the Reds get four runs back off of Wake and Javier Lopez. That 5-4 score holds up thanks to the split card miracle. Four runs for Cincinnati on only three hits thanks to 8 Sox walks and two Wake hit batters.

The Reds 7th inning, which totally changed the game:

Tim Wakefield carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning and Jacoby Ellsbury had
2 base hits at Great American Bpk as the Boston Red Sox beat the Cincinnati
Reds by the count of 5 to 4.

Wakefield(5-4) pitched a fine game. He surrendered 2 hits and 4 walks in 6
and 2/3 innings. The right-handed Wakefield lost his no-hit bid when Jolbert
Cabrera doubled with one out in the 6th inning. Cincinnati threatened in the
9th but their rally came up short.

Jonathan Papelbon was credited with his 10th save. Edinson Volquez(3-6) was
tagged with the loss. Boston now has a record of 40-31. With this loss,
Cincinnati has a 6-4 record of late, 37-33 overall.

June 13, 2008 Cardinals 6, Phillies 3

While the rest of the majors plays interleague ball, the Phillies and Cardinals wage the only intraleague battle on the schedule beginning a four game series, and Ryan Ludwick dashes the Phillies first try to get back over the .500 mark. Ludwick knocks in 5 of the 6 Cardinal runs with the crushing blow being a grand slam homerun in the 7th inning off of Rudy Seanez to break a 2-2 tie. The Cardinals are one of two NL teams that the Phillies have yet to play, the other being the Dodgers who the Phils won't play for the first time until August.

You may recall the name Ryan Ludwick from last years playoffs in my SOM. Despite the Cards losing in the first round in four games to the Braves, Ludwick was the series MVP by lashing out 5 homers, knocking in 14 runs and batting .588 for the series.

After this Cardinal series the Phillies remaining interleague schedule will begin. This year, it will be the annual series against the Red Sox and a series against the Los Angeles Angels in Philly, and series against the Oakland A's and Texas Rangers on the road.

WEB GEMS- Top 5th: Ryan Ludwick robbed Jimmy Rollins of an extra base hit.

At Busch Stadium the St. Louis Cardinals outscored the Philadelphia Phillies 6
to 3.

Ryan Ludwick enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He banged out a single in
the 1st inning, smacked a one-base hit which plated a run in the 5th inning
and emptied the bases with a Grand Slam homerun (his 12th of the season) in
the 7th inning. St. Louis ended up with 11 hits for the game while
Philadelphia had 8.

Todd Wellemeyer(8-3) allowed 3 runs in 7 and 2/3 innings, and picked up the
victory. Ryan Franklin earned the save, his 8th. Rudy Seanez(1-1) was tagged
with the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning giving up 2 hits and 1 walk.

June 13, 2008 Red Sox 8, Reds 3

Mike Lowell cracks two homeruns, Julio Lugo adds a 2-run shot for his first homerun of the season, and a solid Justin Masterson on the mound give the first game in the Battle Of The Red to the Red Sox as the bulk of the interleague schedule begins. Masterson held the Reds hitless until Joey Votto singled with two outs in the 5th, but Justin couldn't bat as well as he pitched striking out all three times to the plate with one of them on a foul bunt for the third strike. But then, that is to be expected for an AL pitcher in an interleague game who has to bat.

Reds pitcher Aaron Harang has one of the more unusual lines in a game as he strikes out 9 in 6 innings but also allows 8 hits, 6 runs and three homers.

Reds by the score of 8 to 3 at Great American Bpk.

Boston took the lead for keeps in the 2nd inning when they scored 2 runs on 2
hits. The highlight belonged to Julio Lugo who quieted the home crowd when
he lifted one out of the park for a two run home run (his 1st of the season).
Boston out-hit Cincinnati for the game, 10 hits to 6.

The winning pitcher was Justin Masterson(2-1) who allowed 3 runs in 7 innings.
Aaron Harang(3-7) was charged with the loss. He served up 3 gopher balls in
6 innings.

June 12, 2008 Phillies 8, Marlins 1

The Philadelphia version of The Bash Brothers strike again as Chase Utley smokes a 2-run homer in the 7th and Ryan Howard blasts a 3-run bomb in the 9th, good for 5 runs that it turns out the Phillies didn't even need. Jamie Moyer is spectacular, only allowing two hits in 8 innings of work for his team-leading 7th win of the season but loses the shutout bid when Cody Ross homers for the Marlins in the 7th inning.

With the win the Phillies sweep the Marlins, winning their 3rd straight and get back to the .500 mark for the first time in a month. The last time the team was above .500 was back on May 10th when they were 19-18.

June 12, 2008 Mets 3, Diamondbacks 0

Johan Santana joins Greg Smith of the Oakland A's in the no-no club for the 2008 SOM season as he tosses his second no-hitter in two years when he no-hits the Diamondbacks. Last year as you may recall he tossed a perfect game. Three walks and a hit batter are all that separate Santana from perfection this time as he becomes the first pitcher to 10 wins, upping his record to 10-1 along with a damn impressive 1.32 ERA.

History was made in New York (NL) as Johan Santana(10-1) tossed a no-hitter
and the New York (NL) Mets defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks by the score of
3 to 0.

Santana provided a brilliant, unforgettable performance for the hometown crowd
at Shea Stadium day. He walked 3 Arizona batters. The New York (NL) players
and coaches started to leave Santana alone with his thoughts after the game
reached the 7th inning. By the time the 9th inning rolled around, you could
hear a pin drop every time he went to his wind-up - and an explosion after
every out. New York (NL) finished with just 6 hits in the victory.

Dan Haren(6-4) took the loss. After the game, Santana was heard to say, 'This
is something I have dreamt about since I was a little boy - to have it come
true is just amazing!'

June 12, 2008 Padres 2, Dodgers 1 (19)

Quite a few very long extra-inning games in SOM this season including this 19 inning doozy between the Padres and Dodgers which is one of five extra inning games today. A 1-1 deadlock from the top of the 6th inning on, the Padres finally come up victorious in the bottom of the 19th when Jody Gerut singles, Edgar Gonzales singles to Dimitri Young which gets past Young and rolls to the fence. Gerut strolls home on the error, and the Padres get the walk-off victory.

Surprisingly fast-paced for a 19 inning game, the time is only 4:38!

June 12, 2008 Red Sox 5, Orioles 4 (11)

It takes 11 innings, but the Sox squeak by the Orioles on a JD Drew walk-off groundout, of all things! First things first, though. It didn't look good at first when Baltimore got 3 runs of of Jon Lester in the 4th and had a 4-1 lead into the 8th inning. But then, the Red Sox bats come alive off of relievers Chad Bradford and George Sherrill for three runs in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game at 4.

It stayes tied until the bottom of the 11th, when Jacoby Ellsbury singles and steals second. Dustin Pedroia singles and Ellsbury only gets as far as third. JD Drew hits the previously mentioned grounder to second with the infield playing in. Second baseman Brian Roberts doesn't even try to throw home, going to first instead to get Drew and Ellsbury trots home easily with the winning run. I still don't know why Roberts didn't throw home to try to get Ellsbury, seems really weird to me. Maybe he forgot that the run would win the game.

This Sox/O's series also featured the top two men in the batting race right now, Jacoby Ellsbury and Nick Markakis. Markakis goes 5 for 13 in the series while Ellsbury goes only 3 for 16. That puts Markakis on top of the AL batting leaderboard now, .357 to Ellsbury's .351.

The 8th inning for the Red Sox, which ties the game at the time:

WEB GEMS- Top 5th: J.D. Drew robbed Alex Cintron of an extra base hit.

Mike Lowell had 2 base hits as the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles
in 11 innings by a score of 5 to 4.

The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. Boston won it in the 11th
inning. After an out was recorded, Jacoby Ellsbury slapped a single.
Ellsbury took his lead and swiped second. Dustin Pedroia then banged out a
single. J.D. Drew was up next and he would ground out giving Boston the
victory as 38,722 happy fans celebrated wildly. Boston had 12 hits overall,
while Baltimore had 7.

The victory went to Manny Delcarmen(4-2) who went 2 innings, allowing no runs.
Dennis Sarfate(2-1) took the loss in relief. He gave up 2 hits and no walks
in 2 and 2/3 innings.

June 11, 2008 Phillies 7, Marlins 3 (10)

Cole Hamels records the first six outs of the game via strikeout and sails through the first 7 innings easily. Ryan Madson pitches a spotless 8th, and when Madson's turn at bat comes up in the top of the 9th Greg Dobbs pinch-hits for him. With a 3-1 lead entering the bottom of the 9th and Brad Lidge about to come into the game, I decide to put Dobbs in the field at first base to give Ryan Howard a bit of a rest. Dobbs only played a couple of games at first all season, his usual position is third, but I thought it seemed pretty safe. Of course what happens - Lidge allows a double and a 2-run homerun for Dan Uggla ties the game 3-all, giving Lidge his third blown save of the year and sends the game into extra frames.

Now with the game going into extra innings, my cleanup hitter Howard is out for the remainder of the game. I was thinking oh shit, what the hell did I do? The cleanup spot, now with Lidge in it, does come up in the top of the 10th with Geoff Jenkins pinch-hitting, and he is intentionally walked and eventually scores. The Phillies knock four runs home in the top of the 10th and take the lead back and get the win after all.
