May 28, 2008 Phillies 8, Rockies 1

Everybody gets in on the act as the Phillies tee off against Rockies rookie Greg Reynolds to the tune of 8 runs in 1 2/3 innings as the Phils cruise to the win. All the Phillie scoring would be off Reynolds in the first two innings as the Rockies relief corps holds them in check the remainer of the game. Adam Eaton contributes a good performance for his 5th win of the season, already one more win than he had in real life.

Not a very good beginning for the career of Rockies rookie Reynolds. Four starts, a 12.83 ERA, and 7 homeruns allowed (including 2 for the Phils today) in a little more than 18 innings of work. 6 runs allowed in his previous two starts, and 8 today. Three of the runs today were unearned, or else the ERA would be even higher.

May 28, 2008 Red Sox 9, Mariners 1

Maybe the Red Sox should try their hands at poker, because 2's were wild today. Mike Lowell and Manny Ramirez each have 2-run homeruns, Sean Casey and Jacoby Ellsbury each have 2-run doubles, and a solo homerun for David Ortiz adds to the mix. Tim Wakefield goes 8 solid innings for the win, his first win in 3 1/2 weeks..

Even though the Mariners lost and are 12 games below .500, they sit closer to first in their division than the 6 games over .500 Sox do. That's what happens when the AL West leader, the Texas Rangers, has a record of 26-29, 3 games below.500!! Seattle sits 4 1/2 behind them, while the Sox are 6 1/2 behind the Toronto Blue Jays who have the best record in the American League at a sizzling 37-18.

May 27, 2008 Rockies 4, Phillies 1 (10)

A very, very sloppy 10th inning with errors commited by Jimmy Rollins, Tom Gordon and Ryan Howard and a passed ball for Chris Coste lead to 3 unearned runs for the Rockies and another tough loss for the Phils. Sloppy game overall with only one of the 5 runs scored between the teams being earned. Tom Gordon gets the loss despite not allowing an earned run.

At Citizen's Bank Park the Colorado Rockies outscored the Philadelphia
Phillies in 10 innings 4 to 1.

The game was deadlocked at 1 after nine full innings. Colorado ended up
winning it in the 10th inning. Ian Stewart led off and keyed the rally when
he reached on an error. Yorvit Torrealba stepped into the batter's box and
he laced a one-base hit. Omar Quintanilla dug into the batters box next, but
he struck out. Tom Gordon then tossed a pitch that the catcher mis-handled.
Jeff Baker stepped into the box and was walked intentionally to load the
bases. Willy Taveras did his part to keep things going and reached on an
error. After another out, Chris Iannetta came up and he delivered a
base-hit, and an error was also committed. Garrett Atkins struck out, unable
to help the rally. Colorado had a total of 8 hits for the game.

The win was credited to Jason Grilli(1-0) who went 2 and 2/3 innings allowing
no runs. Brian Fuentes got the save, his 10th. Gordon(2-2) ended up with the
loss in relief. He was pinned with the loss despite not allowing an earned
run in his 1 inning of work.

Jose Vidro jacked one out of the ballyard and had 4 RBI and J.J. Putz
performed beautifully in relief as the Seattle Mariners outscored the Boston
Red Sox 6 to 5.

It was a good day for Seattle thanks to Vidro. He cracked a two-run shot (his
5th of the season) in the 1st inning and doubled bringing in two baserunners
in the 7th inning. Seattle had 8 hits for the night while Boston had 4.

The winning pitcher was Arthur Rhodes(1-0) who allowed no runs in 2/3 of an
inning. Rhodes got help from Putz who was credited with his 4th save. David
Aardsma(1-3) was the loser in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning and
surrendered 3 hits and 1 walk.

The Seattle ballclub's record now stands at 21-32. With the loss, Boston has
a record of 5-5 lately, 30-25 overall.

May 26, 2008 Rockies 6, Phillies 5

After a 5-2 road trip, the Phillies come back home but twos are wild for the Rockies today for Colorado. Two runs in the 2nd, 3rd and 7th inning negate a Phillie 3-run rally in the bottom of the 7th leaving the Phils a run short on the scoreboard. Jeff Baker for the Rockies and Ryan Howard for the Phils carry the big sticks of the day, with Baker going 2 for 5, a double and homer, and knocking in 3. Howard goes 3 for 4 falling a triple shy of the cycle and knocks in 3 including his NL leading 17th homer of the season.

May 26, 2008 Red Sox 5, Mariners 3

Bartolo Colon gets his first win in a Red Sox uniform when the offense bails him out by turning a 3-2 Seattle lead into a 5-3 Sox lead with a 3-run 7th inning. Colon goes 6, Manny Declarmen goes one inning, and Mike Timlin thanks to a quick 7 pitch 8th inning stays in for the 9th and converts the save for his first save of the year.

What doomed the Mariners was taking out Felix Hernandez. He had been smoking right along with 10 strikeouts through 6 and only allowing one earned run, but at almost 100 pitches was replaced by Sean Green in the 7th. Green allows the three Sox runs and gets the loss.

started the attack as he was hit by a pitch. Jason Varitek was a strikeout
victim, unable to help out. Sean Casey then drew a walk. Lugo was up next
and he stroked a single. Lugo was running on the next pitch and he stole
second. Jacoby Ellsbury added to the rally and lined a base-hit. Seattle
proved to be no trouble in the bottom of the 9th.

Bartolo Colon(1-1) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing
3 runs. Colon got help from Mike Timlin who was credited with his 1st save.
Sean Green(1-3) was the loser in relief. He gave up 3 runs in 2 and 1/3
innings of work.

May 25, 2008 Astros 5, Phillies 4

Nowhere near as close as the score indicates as the Astros, specifically starter Chris Sampson, had the Phillies in check all game. Sampson retired the first 18 consecutive Phillies with a perfect game through the first 6 innings until Jimmy Rollins doubles to lead off the 7th. Rollins would score on a sac fly, but Houston already had a 5-0 lead at that point.

The Phillies make it interesting in the top of the 9th when Chase Utley rips a 3-run homerun with two out off of Jose Velarde (in a non-save situation), but Velarde strikes out Ryan Howard to end the game.

Jon Lester, despite being a bit wild, comes within six outs of a no-hitter as the Sox cruise to the win. Lester would not allow his first hit of the game until Mark Ellis singles with no outs in the 8th inning to put runners on first and second as Lester's 5th walk of the game already had a runner on base. After a doubleplay, Lester walks his 6th batter and gives way to Hideki Okajima who gets the final four outs with ease to prerserve the shutout and the combined one-hitter.

Wildness on both sides of theball today as three Oakland pitchers walks 7 Sox batters along with the 6 walks for Lester to make a combined total of 13 walks in the game.

The A's tandem of Justin Duchscher and Huston Street combine to shut out the Sox on only two hits, while a Frank Thomas 2-run double in the 6th gives Oakland all of the runs needed. Both Sox hits though led to outs on the basepaths, as after JD Drew walked he tried to score from first on a Jason Varitek double in the 2nd inning but was thrown out at home and Jacoby Ellsbury singled in the 9th for the 2nd Sox hit of the game and is picked off first by Street.

Street gets another cheap save for the second straight day, only throwing six pitches in one inning with a 3 run lead to work with. Sox starter Josh Beckett's ERA doesn't suffer any damage as all 3 A's runs were unearned in the loss, but he does fall to 3-5 on the year.

the Boston Red Sox by the score of 3 to 0 at McAfee Coliseum.

Oakland did all of it's offensive work in the 6th inning scoring 3 runners on
2 hits. The big moment was provided by Frank Thomas who came through for the
home fans when he doubled bringing in two baserunners. Oakland out-hit
Boston for the game, 7 hits to 2.

The victory was credited to Duchscherer(2-3) who went 8 innings, allowing no
runs. Huston Street recorded the save, his 5th. Josh Beckett(3-5) took the
loss. He was the victim of a defensive lapse and did not allow an earned run
in the game.

The 'Stros played it tough, as when the Phils scored in the 1st, 2nd and 4th innings Houston immediately tied the game in the bottom of the respective innings including a solo homerun for pitcher Backe in the 4th. The Phillies finally take a lead that sticks in the top of the 7th when Greg Dobbs hits a pinch-hit double, Shane Victorino singles and Chace Utley knocks Dobbs home on another single.

For Victorino, with a 2 for 5 day. he now again has enough plate appearances as of yesterday's game to qualify for the batting title. Vic now leads the National League (and all of the majors) in batting with the sizzling .414 average and the only .400 hitter still left in the majors at this point of the season.

May 23, 2008 Athletics 6, Red Sox 2

A sloppy game with 4 of the runs being unearned, the Sox had no chance today against Rich Harden. Harden was mowing then down, striking out 12, while his counterpart Tim Wakefield does the complete opposite. Wake is wild as hell, walking 4 including 3 in the 2nd inning which knocks the first run of the game home, and throws two wild pitches with one of them also letting a run score. The lone Sox highlight was JD Drew, who rips a ball over the fence to account for both Sox runs. Harden almost goes the distance, but when he walks a batter with two out in the 9th to put runners on first and third stopper Huston Street gets the final out on only three pitches for a cheap save only because he came into the game with the tying run on deck.

The Drew homerun was a ballpark homerun, believe it or not. Oakland has to be the worst park for hitters in the majors. For ballpark singles, both lefty and righty have a 0 chance of a hit. For ballpark homeruns, lefty is a 1-4 and righties are only a 1. Drew's split card came up a 3, so he got the homer being a left-handed hitter. Were he a righty, the game would have been a shutout.

Frank Thomas had 2 base hits and 2 RBI and Rich Harden whiffed 12 batters at
McAfee Coliseum where the Oakland Athletics beat the Boston Red Sox 6 to
2.

Harden(3-1) gave Oakland a solid outing. He allowed only 5 hits and 3 walks
in 8 and 2/3 innings improving his ERA from 3.10 to 2.39. Oakland ended up
with 11 hits for the game while Boston had 5.

Huston Street recorded the save, his 4th. The loss was charged to Tim
Wakefield(3-4). He was hit hard and gave up 8 hits and 4 walks in 4 and 2/3
innings.

Harden was pleased with his performance. He noted, 'I had good zip on my
pitches. Just as important, my location was right on. The fans really got
into the game too - that always helps me. Now, if I can only do that again
in my next outing.'

May 22, 2008 Phillies 5, Astros 3 (10)

This kind of game is more like I expect the Phillies to perform this year, while a surprising move by the Astros manager comes back to bite them in the ass in the end. With the Astros holding a 3-1 lead entering the 7th inning and Roy Oswalt on the mound, Ryan Howard leads off the Phillie 7th with a walk. For some inexplicable reason even with Oswalt at only 81 pitches, 3 hits allowed and 7 K through 6, he is yanked in favor of Doug Brocial. The move totally backfires, as one batter later Geoff Genkins rips a ball over the fence off of Brocialfor the 2-run homerun which ties the game at 3-all.

It stays tied at 3 through the regulation 9, and then in the Phillie 10th Carlos Ruiz walks, is pinch-ran for by Jayson Werth, and next batter Pat Burrell (who just came in on defense in the bottom of the 9th) slams the 2-run homerun for the first Phillie lead since the 1st inning. Brad Lidge has not much trouble in the bottom of the 10th despite a leadoff double and converts his 9th save of the year.

Overall for the game, the Astros outhit the Phillies 10-5 but the Phillies end up on top where it counts - in the run collumn.

In a close game it was the Philadelphia Phillies 5, the Houston Astros 3 in 10
innings at Minute Maid Park.

Both teams were tied at 3 runs apiece after nine innings. Philadelphia won
the hard fought contest in the 10th inning. Carlos Ruiz led off and he drew
a walk. Pat Burrell stepped into the batter's box and he cleared the fences
for a two-run home run (his 11th of the season). Two outs later Chase Utley
was the next batter, but he struck out. Although they lost, Houston did
out-hit Philadelphia 10 to 5.

The win went to Tom Gordon(2-1) who allowed no runs in 1 inning. Brad Lidge
recorded the save, his 9th. Oscar Villarreal(1-1) was the loser in relief.

May 22, 2008 Royals 11, Red Sox 4

A 4-4 tie through 7 innings turns into a laugher when the Royals tee off against Hideki Okajima and Mike Timlin, scoring 3 runs off each and 7 runs over the final two innings. One highlight for the Sox is Kevin Youkilis who continues his early season prowress at the plate. Youk rips a 2-run homerun for his major-league 18th homerun for the season, as well as a .348 batting average good for 6th in the league. Not even the best average on the Sox however, as two teammates are above Youk in the batting race. Julio Lugo is 3rd at .354, and Jacoby Ellsbury leads the AL in batting with a nice .380 average.

Brian Bannister gets the complete game for the Royals with a gargantuan 141 pitch effort.

Brian Bannister completed the game without help from the bullpen and Joey
Gathright had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the Kansas City Royals topped the
Boston Red Sox by a score of 11 to 4 at Fenway Park.

Kansas City erupted with the game winning runs in the 8th inning as they
scored 4 runs on 4 base hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by David
Dejesus who silenced the stadium when he slapped a base-hit bringing in two
baserunners. Kansas City had a total of 15 hits for the game.

Bannister(5-1) got the victory, allowing 4 runs for the game. Craig
Hansen(0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief. With this win, Kansas City
has a 23-24 record. They have been 3-7 lately. With the loss Boston now has
a record of 28-22.
