May 18, 2008 Red Sox 10, Brewers 3

The hits are even at 11 apiece, but when the Red Sox turn on the power and bust open a back and forth game on a Coco Crisp 6th inning homer to go with Jacoby Ellsbury's solo shot and a 3-run bomb for Kevin Youkilis in the 7th, it spells the end for the Brew Crew. Chris Smith makes his major league debut today for the Sox, getting the final four outs while allowing one hit.

The Boston Red Sox had very little trouble at Fenway Park downing the
Milwaukee Brewers. The score was 10 to 3.

Boston jumped on top to stay in the 4th inning when they scored 2 runs on 3
hits. The crucial at-bat was provided by Julio Lugo who made the crowd come
alive when he doubled scoring two baserunners. Boston and Milwaukee each
finished the afternoon with 11 hits.

Josh Beckett(3-4) went 6 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Carlos
Villanueva(3-6) absorbed the loss. He gave up 5 hits and 4 walks in 4 and
2/3 innings.

May 18, 2008 Blue Jays 7, Phillies 2

No chance for the Phillies today as Shaun Marcum is on top of his game for the Jays, only allowing two hits through 6 until Ryan Howard broke the shutout with a solo homerun in the 7th inning. Toronto already had a 3-1 lead at that point, and again get to the bullpen for 4 more runs. Even bringing in Brad Lidge in a non-save situation backfires as he pretty much sucks the joint out again walking 2, throwing 2 wild pitches with one letting a run cross the plate, and a run.

An interesting note about Blue Jays centerfielder Alex Rios. Rios is tied for third in the AL in runs batted in with 40, but has only 3 homeruns! Phillie slugger Ryan Howard, with a homer today to up his season total to 14, has less RBI that Rios with 33. Kevin Youkilis of the Sox, with 16 dingers, only has 37 RBI. Just goes to prove that homeruns don't mean everything when it comes to knocking runners home.

At Citizen's Bank Park the Philadelphia Phillies were battered 7 to 2 by the
Toronto Blue Jays.

Philadelphia was unable to recover after Toronto went ahead in the top of the
2nd inning with 2 runs on 3 hits. Matt Stairs got things going when he
doubled. Shannon Stewart followed and he delivered a one-base hit. Rod
Barajas then slapped a base-hit. One out later, Shaun Marcum stepped up to
the plate and he hit a deep fly. Toronto had 10 hits for the afternoon.

The win went to Marcum(5-1) who allowed 1 run in 6 innings. Kyle Kendrick(1-5)
absorbed the loss. He surrendered 6 hits and 2 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

May 17, 2008 Red Sox 10, Brewers 9 (10)

The Sox were hopeful that Daisuke Matsuzaka and his league leading 6 wins would give the tired bullpen in game two of the doubleheader a break, but that was not to be. Dice-K totally sucks the joint out, as after throwing 37 pitches in the 1st inning while allowing two runs he is even worse in the 2nd throwing 41 pitches including three straight walks which would force in a run, 4 walks total in the inning and 3 more runs. Only a Kevin Youkilis 3-run homer in the bottom of the 1st made the score a respectable 5-3 defecit through only two innings.

Dice-K would settle down a little bit but still only gets through 4 innings at well over 100 pitches, allowing 5 runs and 7 walks. Meanwhile, the Sox tie the game on a Pedroia 2-run double in the 5th for a 5-5 tie. The tie was short-lived, as the Brewers get thre runs in the 6th for an 8-5 lead. But, the never-say-die Sox storm right back getting 3 runs on their own in the bottom of the inning to retie the game, 8-8.

It would stay that way through the regulation 9 until Ryan Brawn rips a solo shot off of Paps in the top of the 10th to give the Brewers the lead back, 9-8. The Sox storm back again with consecutive singles for Casey, Lugo and Ellsbury to get a run and retie the game again. Later in the inning Manny dribbles one to third baseman Bill Hall, who tries to get Manny at first but overthrows first, allowing the winning run to come home on the error. Fianl score - Sox10, Brewers 9.

Play account follows the game.

May 17, 2008 Blue Jays 7, Phillies 6 (10)

A crazy, entertaining game for the fans with the only dissapointment being the final score. Both starters, A.J. Burnett and Adam Eaton sailed through the first 6 innings with the Phillies drawing first blood in the bottom of the 7th on a Jimmy Rollins sac fly. The lead wouldn't last though, as the Jays tee off on the Phillie relievers for a 5-run 8th inning, the big blow being a grand slam homerun for ex-Phillie Rod Barajas. Ryan Howard homers for the Phillies in the 8th to make the score 5-2, and the Phils complete the comeback with a crazy bottom of the 9th scoring 3 runs to tie it. Eric Bruntlett lined into a doubleplay with the bases loaded to kill the rally and send the game to extra innings.

Gregg Zaun hits a 2-run single off of Chad Durbin in the top of the 10th for a 7-5 Jays lead, Shane Victorino homers for the Phillies to lead off the bottom of the 10th to narrow the gap, but that was all they could do. Durbin actually had to bat for himself in the bottom of the 10th due to no more bats off the bench to pinch-hit for him.

Adam Eaton has been the unlucky dog lately. 14 innings in his last two starts, no runs allowed, and nothing to show for it but two no-decisions. The bullpen coughed it up in both games as both turned into losses.

The Toronto Blue Jays nipped the Philadelphia Phillies in 10 innings 7 to 6 at
Citizen's Bank Park in a hard fought contest.

The score was knotted at 5 after nine innings. Toronto was victorious in the
10th inning. Matt Stairs kicked off the action when he delivered a one-base
hit. Lyle Overbay stepped up next and he slapped a base-hit. Two outs later
Gregg Zaun stepped up to the plate and he laced a base-hit. Zaun took second
on the throw. The game was a scoreless duel until the 7th inning.

The winning pitcher was Jesse Carlson(2-1) who allowed no runs in 2/3 of an
inning. Brian Tallet got the save, his 1st. Chad Durbin(1-1) was the losing
pitcher in relief.

May 17, 2008 Brewers 12, Red Sox 3

The Sox come back home after a 5-5 road trip, and apparently suffered jet lag or forgot how to play the game after two days off as they suffer an embarassing loss to their former AL East foes in game one of a doubleheader. Looked like an easy win with the 0-5, ERA over 7 David Bush getting the start for the Brew Crew, but Bush is on top of his game not allowing a run until the 6th. Meanwhile, the Brewers get to Tim Wakefield early and often with solo runs in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th and a 3-run 6th gives Wake the loss. Overall, 10 walks given up for Sox pitchers today and over 200 pitches thrown.

And as if the game hadn't sucked bad enough to that point, Alex Cora makes two errors and David Aardsma throws two wild pitches in the 9th inning to basically give Milwaukee 3 more runs. Aardsma just had to stay in to get his lumps with the bullpen being emptied out save for Papelbon. Not good news with game two of the doubleheader later in the day!

They almost ran out of baseballs at Fenway Park as Milwaukee Brewers clobbered
the Boston Red Sox pitching staff, scoring 12 runs while David Bush(1-5),
with relief help from Mark Difelice, surrendered 3 runs to Boston.

Milwaukee went ahead for good in the top of the 2nd inning scoring a single
run. Milwaukee had many opportunities throughout the game and scored in 6
separate innings.

Difelice earned his 1st save. The loss was charged to Tim Wakefield(3-3). He
pitched 5 and 1/3 innings allowing 5 hits and 5 walks.

May 16, 2008 Phillies 7, Blue Jays 4

Not quite the drama as when these two teams met 15 years earlier in the 1993 World Series as the Phillies rip the tar off the ball smoking four homeruns off of Toronto starter David Purcey, cruising to the win over the AL East leading Blue Jays. The Phils had more runs than hits for the majority of the game, including 3 runs in the 1st inning on only one hit. In that 1st inning the first 3 batters reach base when Jimmy Rollins reaches on an error, Shane Victorino gets hit by a pitch and Chase Utley rips the first of his two homeruns of the game over the fence for the quick 3-0 lead. A solo shot for Utley later in the game, solo homerun for Chris Coste and a 2-run shot for Victorino account for the scoring.

Despite the four homeruns allowed by Purcey, he manages to go almost 7 innings and strikes out 8 of the free-swinging Phillies. Phillies starter Jamie Moyer pretty much cruises to the win, with Tom Gordon getting the save attempt due to Brad Lidge's recent troubles and comes away with his first save of the year..

The loss for the Blue Jays helps out the idle red Sox (rained out) in the standings, as they gain 1/2 a game on the Jays and sit 4 1/2 back.

Chase Utley smashed 2 homeruns and had 4 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies
defeated the Toronto Blue Jays by the score of 7 to 4 at Citizen's Bank
Park.

Utley enjoyed a fine evening at the plate. He rifled a three-run blast in the
1st inning, smashed a solo-shot out of the park (his 13th of the season) in
the 3rd inning and doubled in the 7th inning. Both teams ended up with 7
hits on the night.

The win was credited to Jamie Moyer(5-3) who went 7 and 2/3 innings allowing 3
runs. Moyer was helped out by Tom Gordon who recorded his 1st save. David
Purcey(1-1) absorbed the loss. He served up 4 homeruns in his 6 and 2/3
innings.

'It's been a rough ride lately, but this was a good win for us' said Charlie
Manual, 'Maybe this will put us back on track.'

May 15, 2008 Braves 8, Phillies 6

OMG, nothing can go the Phillies way so far this season. Despite four homers for the team (Rollins, Victorino, Howard and Coste) taking them out to a 6-1 lead, they end up on the short end of the stick. The Braves get 4 runs in the 6th inning to close the gap, and Brian McCann slams a 3-run homerun in the top of the 9th off of Brad Lidge for the 8-6 lead. The Phils threaten in the bottom of the 9th getting two on base, but can't get anyone home as the game goes down as another agonizing loss.

Especially for Brad Lidge. Lidge, after going the first 15 innings of the season unscored upon with 7 saves, has sucked the joint out his last two appearances. Along with today's three runs allowed, loss and blown save he also allowed a run to score his last time out for another loss and blown save. Four runs allowed in two innings with two losses and two blown saves in his last two appearances. For the team overall, 5th straight loss and 6th in last 7 games which equals a season worst four games below .500 record, and puts them 7 games behind the Braves in the division.

Catcher Brian McCann touched them all and had 4 RBI as the Atlanta Braves
rallied impressively to win in dramatic style over Philadelphia Phillies, 8
to 6.

Atlanta had the game winning rally in the top of the 9th inning with 3 runs
utilizing 2 base hits. After an out was recorded, Omar Infante started the
rally when he drew a walk. Jeff Francoeur got his turn next, but he was a
strikeout victim. Mark Teixeira then lined a single. McCann followed and he
rifled a three-run blast (his 6th of the season). Chipper Jones followed,
but he was set down on strikes. Atlanta had a total of 8 hits for the game.

The victory went to Jeff Bennett(2-2) who went 1 and 1/3 innings, allowing no
runs. Bennett was helped out by Manny Acosta who recorded his 1st save. Brad
Lidge(1-2) suffered the loss in relief.

Bobby Cox was feeling mighty fine as he answered questions in his office after
the game, 'Now that was one fine ending! Did you see how the crowd just sat
there in silence after the winning run scored? Here we are celebrating
wildly, and the stadium is cloaked in virtual silence. Weird. but GREAT!'

May 14, 2008 Braves 6, Phillies 3

Brett Myers coughs up four gopherballs, the final two in the 6th inning on a Mark Teixeria solo shot and a 2-run bomb for Kelly Johnson with finally knocks him out of the game, as the struggling Phillies lose their 4th straight. It seemed like every time a ballpark single or homerun chsnce came up for either team, the Braves got the singles and homeruns while the Phils just got outs. Only two runners left on base for the Phillies today.

One homer chance did go the Phillies way at least, when Shane Victorino smoked a 3-run shot in the 3rd inning which at the time tied the game 3-all, but that was all the Phils could muster off of Tom Glavine and Wil Ohman. Mark Kotsay hit a 2-run shot and Jeff Francoeur got a solo homerun for the Braves to account for the rest of the scoring, as all runs today were scored on homeruns.

May 14, 2008 Red Sox 8, Orioles 5

Normally, when a starter allows 4 runs in the first three innings of the game that means he is most likely in a deep hole. Jon Lester was in that situation today, allowing 4 runs through the first 3 innings. But, the Sox give him plenty of support scoring 7 runs in those same first 3 innings, knocking Oriole starter Daniel Cabrear out of the game in the first inning. Kevin Youkilis continues to lay on the power, hitting his 14th and 15th homeruns of the season, along with homers for Dustin Pedroia and Manny Ramirez. Meanwhile, Lester beared down and retired 11 straight at one point before beginning to finally run out of gas in the 7th.

Winning the final three games in the road trip enable the Sox to salvage a 5-5 record for the trip. A welcome return to Fenway is next on the schedule, with the first of the interleague games coming up when their former American League rivals the Milwaukee Brewers come to town. The Sox this year have an interesting interleague schedule, with series at Fenway against the Brewers, Cardinals and Diamondbacks to go along with series on the road against the Reds, Astros and Phillies. The rest of the interleague games are in late June.

May 13, 2008 Braves 8, Phillies 5

The Phillies continue to struggle, losing their 3rd straight and 4th of the last 5 games. This one was over in the early stages when Kyle Kendrick sucks the joint out falling to 1-4, giving the Braves 5 runs and a 5-0 lead. The Phils mount the comeback, scoring two runs in the 5th and 6th innings to get within a run, but the Braves put the game away with a 2-run 8th and an inside-the-park homerun for Mark Kotsay in the 9th.

Shane Victorino and Pat Burrell each hit two doubles in the losing cause for the Phils.

May 13, 2008 Mets 13, Nationals 0

You can I'm sure vouch for a game like this, your typical Washington Nationals game. The pitching staff walks 15 batters with 9 from starter John Lannan, four errors in the field, and the offense can only muster 3 hits. The previous two games, the Nats won both in extra innings at least! I mean, how often does the final line for the game look like this:

Mets 13 7 0
Nats 0 3 4
