May 9, 2008 Twins 13, Red Sox 6

The Twins knock Jon Lester out of the game in the 4th inning as Lester has his worst start of the year with 8 runs allowed, as the Twins put 13 runs on the board tying the season high for runs allowed for the Sox. Joe Mauer was the big star with 6 RBIs, singlehandedly knocking in as many runs as the Red Sox scored.

David Ortiz finally has seemed to found his groove with a 3-run homerun after a season long slump. The homer in the 3rd inning gave the Sox a 3-1 lead, but it all fell apart from there. A .409 average for Papi in the last 5 games including today's homer.

Mauer provided much of the offense. He smacked a three-run homer (his 5th of
the season) in the 3rd inning and delivered a single plating two runs in the
4th inning. For the game Minnesota out-hit Boston 14 to 11.

Boof Bonser(4-2) went 6 innings allowing 6 runs for the victory. Jesse Crain
earned the save, his 2nd. Jon Lester(1-4) was the loser. He was unable to

May 8, 2008 Tigers 4, Red Sox 2

Due to our internet upstairs being down for about 48 hours, two Phillie games were unblogged both against the Diamondbacks. In the first one the Phils staged a dramatic comeback in the late stages, scoring a run in the 8th and 4 in the 9th to turn a 3-0 defecit into a 5-3 victory. However in the other game, the Snakes do it to the Phils when the Phillies blow a 3-1 lead in the 8th as Arizona gets 4 runs for the 5-3 win.

Today, Kevin Youkilis continues his early season power show with his 12th homerun giving the Red Sox 2 runs in the first inning. That however, would be all they could muster off of three Tiger pitchers in the 4-2 loss. A chance in the 9th with two runners on, but Jason Varitek strikes out to end the game on a sour note.

May 7, 2008 Tigers 11, Red Sox 3

Four two out runs in the first inning for the Tigers off of Clay Buchholz gives Detroit the lead that they never relinquish. Buchholz sucks as usual, getting the first two batters out in all of the four innings he pitched but still allows 9 hits and 7 runs. Every single run scored by the Tigers today, all 11 of them, were scored with two outs in their respective innings. Homeruns for Kevin Youkilis and Jacoby Ellsbury help out the Sox on offense, with Youk's homer being his 11th of the seasonand tying him for the major league lead.

May 6, 2008 Phillies 8, Diamondbacks 5

Five-star days on offense for Shane Victorino and Jason Werth as one day after facing 23 year old Max Scherzer the Phils take on 44 year old Randy Johnson. The Big Unit does not have his best stuff today, allowing 7 of the Phillies 8 runs.

Victorino for the day goes 3 for 4, scoring 3 times and falling of all things a single shy of the cycle with a double, triple and homerun. Werth falls the triple shy of a cycle with a 3 for 5 day, including 4 RBIs with a single, double and homerun. Adam Eaton, after a rough first inning, gets credit for the win and Brad Lidge gets save number 6. Lidge came into the game with a 4 run lead but two runners on base in the 9th. Arizona would score one run on a doubleplay groundout in the 9th, and the Phils win their third straight and get back to the .500 mark.

Jayson Werth provided much of the offense. He stroked a single in the 2nd
inning, doubled plating two runs in the 3rd inning and popped a two-run clout
over the fence (his 4th of the season) in the 5th inning. Philadelphia
managed 10 hits in their victory.

Adam Eaton(4-2) got credit for the victory, pitching 6 innings and allowing 3
runs. Brad Lidge recorded the save, his 6th. Randy Johnson(1-4) ended up
with the loss.

May 6, 2008 Red Sox 6, Tigers 4

Detroit rips three homeruns off of Tim Wakefield to jump out in front 4-2 in the early going, but the Sox do not go down quietly. Mike Lowell's solo homerun in the 4th narrows the gap to a run, a sac fly for Kevin Cash in the 6th ties the score and takes Wakefield off the hook for a loss, a sac fly for Manny in the 7th gives the Sox the lead and puts Wake in line for the win, and an insurance run in the 9th on a Dustin Pedroia RBI single. 10 for 15 overall for the top three in the order for the Sox, including a 4 for 5 day for Coco Crisp.

Wakefield ends up with the win in the sub-par outing, Mike Timlin, Javier Lopez and David Aardsma handle the 7th and 8th innings, and Paps goes the 9th for his 5th save.

May 5, 2008 Phillies 7, Diamondbacks 2

In another battle of young vs. old, 23 year old Arizona pitcher Max Scherzer makes his major league debut against 45 year old Jamie Moyer. Scherzer holds his own for the first 6 innings, shutting down the Phillies while the D'Backs get a couple of runs and lead 2-0 entering the 7th. Scherzer walks the first two batters in the 7th and allows a single, ending his day with the 2-0 lead, and the Arizona bullpen falls apart giving the Phillies 7 runs over the final three innings of the game as the Phils win easily.

Ryan Howard and Mark Reynolds, the strikeout kings, surprisingly only struck out once betwen the two of them. Why are they called the strikeout kings? We all know about Howard's whiffing (199 in real life) but Reynolds puts that to shame as he became the first player ever to strike out more than 200 times with a total of 204 in real life! Putting that in batting average perspective, Howard's would be a .326, but Reynolds puts that to shame too coming in with a .378 whiff percentage! If you look at the top 10 strikeout totals for batters in one season, all but two have been since 2000 and the top 4 have been in the past two years (Reynolds 204, Howard 199 in both '07 and '08 and Jack Cust with 197 in '08).

Fun fact for the day: When Jamie Moyer made his major league debut for the Chicago Cubs in 1986, his opponent today Max Scherzer was still in diapers one month shy of his 2nd birthday!!!

May 5, 2008 Red Sox 10, Togers 4

The Red Sox begin the first of two 10 game road trips this season (the second is the end of June into early July) with a stop in the Motor City in the first game of a four game set. They come out swinging, as back-to-back homeruns for Manny and Mike Lowell chase Tigers starter Jeremy Bonderman from the game in the 3rd inning and the Sox lead 7-0 after 3 1/2. Daisuke Matsuzaka lets Detroit get back in the game as three Tigers his balls over the fence to narrow the score to 7-4, but a 3 run Sox 7th puts the game away. Note the marathon relief effort for Aquilno Lopez as he throws 83 pitches in relief for the Tigers in 4 1/3 innings! With all the run support, more than enough for Dice-K and he gets his major-league leading 6th win of the season.

May 4, 2008 Phillies 7, Giants 0

Before today, Giants starter Ted Lincecum was absolutely dominating. 4-1 with a miniscule ERA of 0.78 in his first 5 starts. That is, until he ran into the Phillies today. Eeriely similar to what they did to Randy Wolf of the Padres a few games ago the Phils score four quick first inning runs, getting more runs in one inning off Lincecum than he had allowed the entire season in almost 35 innings!! His ERA goes up by almost a run and a half by the time it is done as the Phils get 6 runs off him in 4 innings and cruise to the win. 13 runners left on base for the Phillies, or else the score could have been much higher.

Finally getting some runs to work with as his run support so far was at only 3.33, Cole Hamels ends up not needing them at all as he shuts down the Giants for 8 innings and strikes out 9. Tom Gordon takes the uneventful 9th inning to preserve the 3rd Phillie shutout of the season. On the batting side, Shane Victorino is on his horse with a 3 for 3 day, walking twice, scoring twice and stealing two bases. Nice to have him back in the lineup again!

May 4, 2008 Red Sox 5, Rays 4 (10)

You may notice that a date in the blog, May 3rd and the Phillies game on the 2nd, were not blogged. Two bolts of lightning struck in the backyard very close to the house and knocked our cable, phone and internet out for about 24 hours until it was fixed earlier this afternoon. Nothing worth blogging anyway. The Phillies lost both days to the red-hot Giants 10-4 and 3-2 to continue their recent 2-7 slump. In the game on the 3rd, the Phils left the bases loaded in both the 8th and 9th innings unable to come through with the clutch hit to tie or take the lead in the game. The Sox lost the game on the 3rd to the Rays 5-2 for their third straight loss.

In today's game, Jon Lester finally got some runs to work with (his 4.50 run support is lowest among the starters), but made two huge mistake pitches on a solo homerun for Jonny Gomes in the 2nd and a huge 3-run bomb for Akinori Iwamura which tied the game 4-4 in the 4th inning. The score stayed 4-4 until the Sox come through in the bottom of the 10th. With one out, Jacoby Ellsbury singles and steals second. Dustin Pedroia can't help and as he grounds out on what would have been a double play grounder if not for the steal for out number two, and Kevin Youkilis comes through with the walk-off double as Ellsbury trots home with the winning run. Papelbon gets the win as he came in to pitch because he hasn't pitched in a week with the Sox slide.

Ellsbury's recent 16-for-29 hot streak has enabled him to go above teammate Julio Lugo and gives Jacoby the AL batting race lead over Julio, .388 to .387. Lugo we know won't be on top at the end even if he bats like this since he will be done for the year in mid-July, but I'll enjoy it while it's here.

Kevin Youkilis hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI at Fenway Park as the Boston Red
Sox beat the Tampa Bay Rays in 10 innings by the count of 5 to 4.

The score was knotted at 4 after nine innings. Boston was victorious in the
10th inning. After an out was recorded, Jacoby Ellsbury drew a walk.
Ellsbury swiped second base. One out later, Youkilis stepped in and he
doubled giving Boston the win much to the delight of the home town crowd.
Boston banged out 7 hits on the afternoon.

Jonathan Papelbon(2-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 1 and 2/3 innings.
J.P. Howell(1-1) suffered the loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning
and surrendered 1 hit and 1 walk.

May 2, 2008 Rays 5, Red Sox 2

A wild Clay Buchholz, some sloppy defense and serious lack of hitting in the clutch are what cost the Sox a win today. Three errors in the field don't help Buchholz's start any, as he walks 4 and allows 6 hits good for 5 runs in only 4 innings of work. A VERY early hook for Rays starter Edwin Jackson, yankeed after only 16 pitches, 2/3 of an inning and two runs via 4 Sox hits. Apparently it helped the Rays as after a 4-run outburst in the 2nd inning off Buchholz, five Tampa relievers hold the Sox scoreless despite 8 hits and 6 walks.

The big story was this - an ungodly 15 runners left on base for the Sox today, including the bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th with Jason Varitek striking out to end the game.

the Boston Red Sox by a score of 5 to 2 at Fenway Park.

Tampa Bay came up with 4 runs in the top of the 2nd inning when they had 4

as he slapped a single bringing in two baserunners. Neither team managed to
score after the 4th inning.

The winning pitcher was Trever Miller(2-1) who allowed no runs in 1 and 1/3
innings. Dan Wheeler got the save, his 6th. Clay Buchholz(2-2) took the
loss. He was knocked around pretty good, giving up 5 runs in 4 innings.

May 1, 2009 Phillies 7, Padres 2

Before today, Randy Wolf for the Padres was 4-0 with an ERA of 0.53. Then he ran into the firing squad, as the Phils tee off against their former staff ace with 3 homers and 5 runs in 4 innings, upping Wolf's ERA by over a run and handing him his first loss of the season. Five homeruns overall for the Phillies with Shane Victorino, Jayson Werth, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell all handing the fans in the outfield seats some souveniers. Adam Eaton gets his best start of the year only allowing one run in almost 7 innings of work for the win.

For Howard, Utley and Burrell it gives each of them 9 homeruns on the year, now tied for 2nd in the NL homer race behind the Marlins' Mike Jacobs who has a major-league leading 11. It also gives the Phillies as a team 41 homeruns, which leads the National League and is second in the majors behind the 42 for the Chicago White Sox.

At Citizen's Bank Park the San Diego Padres were battered 7 to 2 by the
Philadelphia Phillies.

Philadelphia started with a bang, jumping out to an early lead in their half
of the first scoring 2 runs. Shane Victorino led off and started the attack
as he was hit by a pitch. Jayson Werth stepped into the batter's box and he
popped a two-run clout over the fence (his 3rd of the season). Chase Utley
was a strikeout victim, unable to help out. Ryan Howard struck out, unable
to help the rally. Philadelphia totaled 8 hits on the night.

The victory was credited to Adam Eaton(3-2) who went 6 and 2/3 innings,
allowing 1 run. Randy Wolf(4-1) was the loser. He served up 3 gopher balls
in 4 innings.

May 1, 2008 Blue Jays 5, Red Sox 4

Manny Ramirez flexes his muscle, hammering a 3-run game tying homerun in the 3rd inning with all three runs being unearned due to two Toronto errors on the previous two batters and two outs in the inning, and a nice 3 for 4 day for Coco Crisp, but it is not enough as Vernon Wells hits a 2-run homer on David Aardsma's first pitch of the game in the 8th inning. The Sox do mount a threat off of B.J.Ryan in the 9th as they score a run and get the tying run to third with two outs, but pinch-hitter JD Drew flies out to end the game.

A.J. Burnett gets the win for the Jays allowing no earned runs because of the previously mentioned errors, and Manny Declarmen gets the loss for the Sox when the runner he put on base is knocked home by the Wells homer off Aardsma.

WEB GEMS- Top 1st: Jed Lowrie robbed Vernon Wells of a base hit.

The Toronto Blue Jays edged the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park by the score of
5 to 4.

Toronto came through with the game-winning runs in the 8th inning with 2 runs
utilizing 3 base hits. Matt Stairs opened up the inning nicely when he hit a
single. Vernon Wells stepped into the batter's box and he cleared the fences
for a two-run home run (his 9th of the season). After an out was recorded,
Shannon Stewart stepped in and he laced a base-knock. David Aardsma then had
one get away for a wild pitch. Rod Barajas came to the plate and was walked
intentionally. Marco Scutaro was a strikeout victim, unable to help out.
Alex Rios followed and he drew a walk to load the bases. Boston made it
exciting in the 9th, but they were unable to push the needed runs across.

A.J. Burnett(3-2) went 8 innings allowing 3 runs for the win. Burnett got
relief help from B.J. Ryan who gained credit for his 5th save. Manny
Delcarmen(2-2) was the loser in relief.
