July 22, 2008 Mariners 7, Red Sox 5

After not scoring for 19 straight innings and only scoring one run in the previous 30 innings, Jacoby Ellsbury doubles that total with one swing of the bat as part of a 3-run Sox 3rd inning, and a 3-1 lead. However, Daisuke Matsuzaka shows his wild side today by walking 6, throwing a wild pitch and hitting a batter with over 100 pitches thrown in less than four innings and a Jeremy Reed bases-clearing triple after four straight walks by Dice-K finally ends his day after 6 runs allowed (at least only 2 were earned). Justin Masterson goes a nice 3 1/3 of scoreles long relief and the Sox get two runs in the 7th to get back in it and get two runners in the 9th, but no one can score. The losing streak reaches five games, the longest of the season.

Speaking of losing streaks, boy the Washington Nationals just can't catch a break this year. A 7-6 Nats lead over the Giants entering the bottom of the 9th in San Francisco is wasted away when Joel Hanrahan walks two batters and John Bowker hits his first homerun in a month for a 3-run, walk-off homerun as the Nats losing streak reaches an unbelievable 14 games. That is a record long losing streak in Washington, but the longest losing streak in franchise history was in the teams first year, 1969, when they lost 20 straight back in Montreal. Still a ways to go before they do that.

June 21, 2008 Mariners 2, Red Sox 0

The Sox bats are held silent again as a scoreless battle between lefties Jon Lester and Jarrod Washburn changed for the worse when M's catcher Jeff Clement gets the only runs of the game on a 2-run homerun in the 5th. J. J .Putz gets the save for the Mariners when he comes into the game with two outs in the 7th inning and goes the rest of the way. For Seattle, seven different pitchers have saves (Brandon Morrow has the most with 7) in their apparent stopper by committee. For the Sox, they lose their fourth straight and have only scored one run over their last three games on a so far very quiet west coast swing.

In a game for the baseball purist, Jarrod Washburn(6-7) and Jon Lester(8-6)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Seattle Mariners finally emerged
victorious over Boston Red Sox, 2 to 0.

Seattle tallied 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning when they had 4 base
hits. Bryan Lahair opened up the inning nicely when he delivered a base-hit.
Jeff Clement next to the plate and he cleared the fences for a two-run home
run (his 5th of the season). Yuniesky Betancourt then stroked a single.
After an out was recorded, Willie Bloomquist stepped up to the plate and he
laced a single. Raul Ibanez came to the plate and grounded into a double
play. Seattle finished with 9 hits while Boston ended up with 4.

J.J. Putz gained credit for his 6th save. With this win, Seattle has a 45-54
record. They have been 6-4 lately. With the loss Boston now has a record of
61-40.

July 20, 2008 Phillies 8, Marlins 3

Not only do the Phillies have their variation of the Bash Brothers with Ryan Howard and Chase Utley running 1-2 in the league in homers (Howard hit his 32nd today, and Utley has 31), they also have what I will call the Flash Brothers in the form of Jimmy Rollins and Shane Victorino. Both get a steal today and sit 5th and 6th in the league in steals (Victorino with 26 and no caught stealing, Rollins with 21). Starter Cole Hamels helps his own cause with a 2-run double while going 7 innings allowing only one run, and it all adds up to an easy win. The struggling Clay Condrey gets a little action to try to gain some confidence back with a big 7 run lead, does allow 2 runs in the 8th but pitches a spotless 9th.

I forgot to mention during the Diamondbacks series that Arizona hitter Connor Jackson had been smoking the hell out of the ball. He went hitless yesterday to end his hitting streak at 28 games, passing Dustin Pedroia's 24 games streak as the longest in the majors this year.

The Philadelphia Phillies easily topped the Florida Marlins; the final score
was 8 to 3.

Philadelphia wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning scoring one
runner on 2 hits. Philadelphia finished with 9 hits in the victory.

Cole Hamels(7-5) got credit for the victory, pitching 7 innings and allowing 1
run. Josh Johnson(0-1) was hit with the loss. By giving up 4 runs in 5
innings his ERA increased from 4.50 to 5.00.

July 20, 2008 Angels 7, Red Sox 1

The Sox score first in the top of the 1st inning, however that was all they would do as the Angels dominate and deny Tim Wakefield his first shot at win number 10. Sox have come out flat since the All-Star break as the Angels sweep the three game series and Boston drops back into second place in the East, two percentage points behind Toronto.

Jeff Mathis touched them all and had 2 RBI at Angels Stadium as the Los
Angeles(AL) Angels beat the Boston Red Sox 7 to 1.

In the bottom of the 2nd inning Los Angeles(AL) scored 3 runs with the help of
3 hits. Torii Hunter led off and started the rally when he stroked a
one-base hit. Hunter was safe at second on a stolen base. Garret Anderson
then stroked a base-hit. After another out, Howie Kendrick dug into the
batters box next, but he struck out. Mathis stepped into the box and cracked
a two-run shot (his 8th of the season). That early scoring held up. Los
Angeles(AL) ended up with 11 hits for the game while Boston had 6.

The win went to Jon Garland(7-7) who allowed 1 run in 8 innings. The loss was
charged to Tim Wakefield(9-6). He was knocked around, surrendering 6 runs in
5 innings.

July 20, 2008 Rockies 12, Pirates 8 (12)

Now here is a wild one. The Rockies went into the top of the 9th holding a 6-3 lead, but closer Brian Fuentes allows 5 runs to Pittsburgh (hit batter, single, walk, 2-run double and another 2-run double which Nate McLouth mishandles to allow the batter to also score) and suddenly the Pirates are in front 8-6. TJ Beam gets the save chance for the Bucs, and can't find the strike zone as he walks four straight batters for a run and a single drives anothe run across the plate. Tied up after nine, 8-8.

It stays tied until the bottom of the 12th when two walks and an error sandwiched around an out off of Damaso Marte load the bases for Garret Atkins. Atkins gets all of it, and launches it over the wall for the grand salami to give the Rockies the win after all. To sum it up, a 6-3 Rockies lead after 8 ends up a 12-8 Rockies win in 12 won on a walk-off grand slam homerun. Nothing like the launching pad that is Coors Field!

Brad Hawpe slammed a homerun and had 4 RBI at Coors Field where the Colorado
Rockies beat the Pittsburgh Pirates in 12 innings 12 to 8.

The game was deadlocked at 8 after nine full innings. Colorado came out on
top in the 12th inning. The highlight belonged to Garrett Atkins who came
through for the home fans when he launched a Grand Slam homerun (his 14th of
the season). Colorado managed 15 hits in their victory.

Taylor Buchholz(1-2) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. Damaso
Marte(1-3) took the loss in relief. It was a tough loss for him as he did
not allow an earned run in his 2 and 2/3 innings of work.

July 19, 2008 Marlins 4, Phillies 1

Kyle Kendrick's struggles continue as he suffers his 10th loss of the year. Almost all of the scoring was in the first inning when Jimmy Rollins led off the game with a homerun for the only Phillie run and the Marlins score 3 in the bottom of the inning with a Jorge Cantu RBI single and Dan Uggla's 2-run homerun. Maike Jacobs adds a homerun for Florida later in the game to cap the scoring. Ryan Howard had two chances late in the game with a run on base to knock one home for two runs, but struck out both times and three times total.

FYI, the Nationals lose again today for their 12th straight loss which is their second 12 game losing streak of the season! Over the last month in DC, 3-20 for a major league worst record of 30-68. Even if the Nationals play .500 ball the rest of the way, their curent .306 winning percentage would equal out to a final record of 49-113.

WEB GEMS- Bot 8th: Chase Utley robbed Dan Uggla of a base hit.

First baseman Mike Jacobs homered and Scott Olsen had a strong outing as the
Florida Marlins defeated the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 4 to 1 at
Dolphins Stadium.

Florida wasted no time and took the lead in the first inning scoring 3 runs
utilizing 2 base hits. Hanley Ramirez led off and started the attack as he
drew a walk. Ramirez swiped second base. After an out was recorded, Jorge
Cantu came up and he hit a single. After another out, Dan Uggla stepped up
to the plate and he bombed a two-run dinger (his 27th of the season). That
early scoring was all that Olsen(7-6) needed. Florida finished with 8 hits
while Philadelphia ended up with 5.

Kevin Gregg earned the save, his 14th. Kyle Kendrick(3-10) took the loss.
The Florida ballclub's record now stands at 45-52. With the loss
Philadelphia now has a record of 49-49.

July 19, 2008 Angels 2, Red Sox 0

Josh Beckett continues to be plagued with lack of help from his teammates as his 4.00 run support is worst on the team (the team is averaging 5.51 runs per game), only allowing two runs and striking out 10 but as we know you can't win a game if your teammates don't score any runs. Beckett falls to 5-9 despite an ERA below 4 as three Angels combine on the 5-hit shutout. The Sox do get two runners on in the 9th off of Francisco Rodriguez with singles for Pedroia and Manny, but nobody can score as Rodriguez gets the save for the second straight day.

Joe Saunders(7-7) and Josh Beckett(5-9) treated the Los Angeles(AL) fans to a
fine pitching duel at Angels Stadium. The Los Angeles(AL) Angels eventually
emerged as victors over the Boston Red Sox by the score of 2 to 0.

Saunders pitched a fine game. He surrendered 3 hits and 2 walks in 7 innings
lowering his ERA to 4.38. Boston threatened in the 9th but Los Angeles(AL)
was able to put down the rally.

Saunders got help from Francisco Rodriguez who was credited with his 24th
save.

July 18, 2008 Phillies 9, Marlins 3

Finally blessed with some runs to work with as his run support of 4.63 is the worst on the team, Jamie Moyer's decent start is rewarded with a win as the Phillies have no problem dispatching the Marlins. Moyer did allow Florida 2 runs in the 2nd inning, but Ryan Howard's 3-run homer and a 2-run shot for Carlos Ruiz changed that quick. 10-4 in the last 14 games as the Phils seem to finally be getting it into gear.

July 18, 2008 Angels 9, Red Sox 8

A big day for Manny Ramirez (double, homer, 5 RBI) is wasted when the tandem of David Aardsma and Mike Timlin suck the joint out by giving 5 runs to the Angels without either one retiring a batter in the 7th inning to turn a 7-4 Sox lead into a 9-7 defecit. A run in the 8th is all the Sox can muster against Francisco Rodriguez, who gets his 23rd save. Not quite the pace of his real-life 62 save season though.

Howie Kendrick lofted one into the 'cheap seats' and had 2 RBI as the Los
Angeles(AL) Angels defeated the Boston Red Sox by a score of 9 to 8 at Angels
Stadium.

Darren O'Day(3-3) was called upon to do the job and he was the winning
pitcher. He went 2/3 of an inning allowing 1 hit and no walks. It was
roller coaster of a game as the lead change hands 6 times.

Francisco Rodriguez recorded the save, his 23rd. Mike Timlin(3-2) was charged
with the loss in relief. He gave up 2 runs and 3 hits without retiring a
batter.

National League all stars

Here is the NL All-Star bunch. Four teams have no rep Washington, Houston, Milwaukee and St. Louis. For the Nationals, pitcher Odalis Perez would be the choice (7-5, 2.98 for a 36 games below .500 Nationals team). Houston's rep would be center fielder Michael Bourn and his major league leading 39 stolen bases. What dooms Bourn from an appearance outright is his .199 batting average.

For the Brewers, first baseman Prince Fielder gets the nod. If not for his stiff competition at first base from Ryan Howard (.265, 30, 76) and the Braves' Mark Teixeira (.298, 16, 71 and a 15 games over .500 Braves team) Fielder would undoubtedly be on the team based on his stats (.304, 26, 66). If you ask me, Fielder should be the direct backup instead of Teixeira.
As for St. Louis, the choice would be pitcher Todd Wellemeyer (9-6, 3.34 ERA in 18 starts) basically because of no clear-cut choice for a rep like the other teams.
