August 9, 2008 Phillies 7, Pirates 1

The Phillies flex the muscles as Chris Coste rips out 2 homeruns, Chase Utley gets an inside the park job, and Ryan Howard smokes his league leading 35th over the fence as they dispatch the Pirates with ease for their 4th straight win. Pitcher Brett Myers almost has as many hits with the bat as he allowed for the game, going 2 for 3 at the plate with a double while allowing 3 hits through 7 innings. Myers also breaks a personal 3 game losing streak with the win.

You may notice in the box score that Eric Bruntlett came in to pinch-run for Utley in the 8th inning, which may seem a bit odd. Utley was hit by a pitch, and the play by play says that the pitch nailed him in the head and he was helped down to first base. Just to keep things a bit realistic, I took Utley out of the game at that point as any player would be if they were beaned in the head. Bruntlett is my only other second baseman on the team, so he came in to play second in the top of the 9th.

Chris Coste blasted 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies
defeated the woeful Pittsburgh Pirates 7 to 1 at Citizen's Bank Park.

Coste provided much of the offense. He cracked a two-run shot in the 2nd
inning and lofted a solo-blast 'downtown' in the 6th inning. Philadelphia
had 12 hits overall, while Pittsburgh had 5.

Brett Myers(8-8) went 7 innings allowing 1 run for the win. Ian Snell(7-10)
was the losing pitcher. He allowed 4 homeruns in 5 innings of work.

August 9, 2008 Red Sox 5, White Sox 4

It didn't look like a win at first when Chicago gets 4 runs off of Daisuke Matsuzaka in the 2nd inning on only two hits via a Jed Lowrie error, an RBI double for Nick Swisher and a 3-run blast for Dewayne Wise, but that would be the only inning in which the White Sox would get a hit or score a run. The Sox bail Dice-K out with David Ortiz ripping a solo homerun in the 4th, Lowrie makes up for his eror with a 6th inning 2-run double, and Kevin Youkilis puts them ahead for good with a 2-run single in the 7th. That puts Matsuzaka in line for his 12th win, Justin Masterson goes the 7th and 8th innings striking out 4 and Paps takes the 9th whiffing two more for his 22nd save. Chicago only leaves one runner on base for the game, and all four runs are unearned.

David Ortiz blasted a homerun as the Boston Red Sox outscored the Chicago (AL)
White Sox 5 to 4.

In the top of the 7th inning Boston scored 2 runs. The key offensive moment
was provided by Kevin Youkilis who silenced the crowd when he banged out a
single which was good for two runs. Jonathan Papelbon was perfect in the
ninth giving him his 22nd save on the season.

The victory was credited to Daisuke Matsuzaka(12-3) who went 6 innings,
allowing 4 runs. Adam Russell(1-2) was the losing pitcher in relief. By
surrending 2 runs in 2/3 of an inning his ERA jumped from 3.71 to 4.58.

Boston now has a record of a division leading 70-47. Chicago (AL) has a
record of 71-45 after the loss.

August 8, 2008 Phillies 3, Pirates 2

Once again on 8/8/08 the number 8 seems pretty good as Chris Coste's 8th homerun of the year, good for a 2-run shot, breaks a scoreles tie in the 7th inning as the Phillies win their first game in the yearly battle of Pennsylvania after being swept by the Pirates back in April. Joe Blanton goes to 2-1 as a Phillie pitching scoreless ball, but Brad Lidge loses the shutout in the 9th by allowing two runs and still records the save (undeserved if you ask me). Third straight win for the Phils and they sit three games over the .500 mark for their best record all season.

Speaking of won-loss records, Pittsburgh has the second worst record in the National League (45-70) above only the Nationals (39-77) . The Nats won their third straight game today for a season best winning streak and have won 7 of their last 11 for their best run of the year so far, but they still sit seven games worse than the Pirates.

One run was the difference at Citizen's Bank Park as the Philadelphia Phillies
defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 3 to 2.

Joe Blanton(9-8) looked very much in control throughout the night. He was
stingy on the mound, allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk in 7 and 1/3 innings.
The game was a scoreless duel until the 7th inning.

Blanton was helped out by Brad Lidge who recorded his 24th save. Paul
Maholm(4-11) was the loser. He pitched 6 and 2/3 innings giving up 4 hits
and 1 walk.

August 8, 2008 Red Sox 10, White Sox 3

The American League's two best teams do battle in the battle of the Sox, and the Red ones score double digits with every starter getting at least one hit. Kevin Youkilis and Big Papi each jack one out of the yard, and Jason Bay has his best day so far as a member of the Red Sox as they roll to the win.

I guess 8's are wild today on an appropiate date (8/8/08!!) as the BoSox knock around Mark Buehrle to the tune of 8 runs, the Chicago gets 8 hits for the game, Red Sox hitters strike out 8 times, and due to an error two of the runs were unearned so the White Sox pitchers allow 8 earned runs. Even the time and attendance have 8's in them - 38, 098 people and a time of 3:18. I just noticed this one too, the time right now on my clock - 8:58 PM! Gonna play the lottery after this one!!!

After being mired in a 6 for 43 slump, Jimmy Rollins has gotten back to his leadoff self the last two games. 2 for 3 with a walk last game with a steal, and a perfect 3 for 3 today again with a walk and a steal as the Phils win a squeaker and take two of three from the Marlins. Cole Hamels becomes the first Phillie to 10 wins, Brad Lidge gets his 23rd save and the team holds the opposition to three runs of less for the 8th time in the last 11 games. The Phillies are second in the wild card standings, but unfourtunately 10 1/2 games behind the wildcard leading Mets.

August 7, 2008 Nationals 14, Rockies 10

It took over four months and this game sure as hell wasn't pretty, but Jason Bergmann will take it as he finally gets win number one of the 2008 season. Blessed with a big 11-2 lead, Bergamnn and two other pitchers almost implode when the Rockies score 7 runs in the 7th to close within a run, but the Nats score 3 in the top of the 9th to seal the deal and send Bergmann home happy now that he is 1-12. Six errors between the two teams (four by the Nationals with three of those errors from Ryan Zimmerman including two in the same inning) make 12 of the 24 total runs in the game unearned.

This was game two of a doubleheader, and the Nationals also won game one 7-3 for a two game winning streak to tie their highest winning streak of the season which they have now accomplished seven times.

Play account follows the box score.

August 6, 2008 Phillies 4, Marlins 3 (10)

Without a doubt, one of the more interesting games I have ever played. Very quiet in the beginning, crazy at the end. Kyle Kendrick gets by far his best start of the year, going 7 only allowing 2 hits and one run (a homer to Jorge Cantu after Kendrick had retired the first 12 Marlins in order), but the Phillies couldn-t get anything going on offense either against a foursome of Florida pitchers and after 7 the score is tied at 1 apiece. J. A. Happ gives a run to the Fish in the 8th, and it was looking like another tough loss. But when Arthur Rhodes comes in for the Marlins after a So Taguchi pinch-hit single off of Jeff Nelson in the bottom of the 9th, the Phils go to work. Jayson Werth singles and Jimmy Rollins hits a fly ball deep enough to score Taguchi from third, and we have a 2-2 game after regulation.

Entering the 10th, I had two slight problems. First problem - no third basemen!! Regular third baseman Pedro Feliz in injured so Eric Bruntlett has been playing third in his abscence. I pinch-hit for Bruntlett with Mike Cervenak in the 7th, and Cervenak came in to play third. Taguchi pinch-hit for Cervenak to start that 9th inning rally and Greg Dobbs had pinch-hit in the 8th inning for the pitcher, so catcher Carlos Ruiz had to come in to play third. Ruiz did play one inning at third base during the season and was the only other person with third base on the card. That is the only inning other than catcher he has ever played in his career.

John Baker (where's Ponch?) homers off of Ryan Madson in the top of the 10th to give Florida their lead back, 3-2. With Rhodes still on the mound in the bottom of the 10th, the Phils get to him again with three straight singles (Utley, Howard and Burrell) to score a run and tie the game back up. Now, with pitcher Madson due up I have my second problem - no bats left on the bench! With no outs and runners on first and second, perfect bunt situation so the best bunter I have, pitcher Jamie Moyer (who pitched yesterday) comes in to pinch-hit for Madson and lays down a perfect bunt to third baseman Cantu. It must be the first time I have ever had a pitcher pinch-hit for someone. Cantu throws it past first base for an error which loads the bases. Chris Coste can't help and lines out for the first out, and next batter fellow catcher (now 3B) Ruiz rips one to center to drive home Howard with the winning run!! The error ended up not making a difference in the outcome.

Chase Utley had 4 hits and Kyle Kendrick had a strong outing at Citizen's Bank
Park where the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Florida Marlins in 10 innings 4
to 3.

Both teams were tied at 2 runs apiece after nine innings. Philadelphia ended
up winning it in the 10th inning. Utley kicked off the action when he lashed
a single. Ryan Howard stepped up to the plate and he laced a single. Pat
Burrell then stroked a base-hit. Jamie Moyer followed and he reached on an
error. After an out was recorded, Carlos Ruiz came to the plate and singled.
Philadelphia had 13 hits for the night while Florida had 6.

Ryan Madson(2-4) went 2 innings allowing 1 run for the victory. Arthur
Rhodes(1-1) was charged with the loss in relief. He pitched 1 inning giving
up 5 hits and no walks.

August 6, 2008 Red Sox 8, Royals 5

Tim Wakefield is a bit off in the early going, starting the game allowing asingle, sac bunt, RBI double and two consecutive wild pitches to bring another run home, but the Sox bail him out scoring seven runs in the first four innings off of Luke Hochevar to hand Hochevar his 10th loss of the year. Alex Cora ties a career high with a four hit day, Kevin Youkilis goes 3 for 4 including a 2-run homer, and Big Papi knocks one over the fence. It all adds up to Wake's 11th win of the year, putting him back into a tie with Dice-K for the team lead in wins.

Jason Bay gets his first Sox steal, and despite a walk and scoring a run continues to struggle a bit with his new team. Bay is only batting .100 (2 for 20) in the six games since coming to Boston, but both hits were for extra bases (double and homerun) and he has walked 6 times along with knocking in 3 runs and scoring three times. That got me thinking about Manny, and since going to L.A. Ramirez is .263 (5 for 19) and no homers or RBI.

Kevin Youkilis hit one over the fence and had 3 RBI as the Boston Red Sox beat
the Kansas City Royals by a score of 8 to 5.

Boston came up with 3 runs in the 2nd inning. Jason Bay started the inning
off right when he drew a walk. Bay then stole second base. After an out was
recorded, Kevin Cash came to the plate and drew a walk. Alex Cora came up
and he doubled. J.D. Drew stepped into the box and stroked a single. Jed
Lowrie kept things alive and grounded into a double play. For the game
Boston out-hit Kansas City 14 to 11.

The winning pitcher was Tim Wakefield(11-7) who allowed 4 runs in 5 innings.
Wakefield got help from Hideki Okajima who earned his 3rd save. Luke

August 5, 2008 Marlins 2, Phillies 1

The Phils have owned the Marlins so far this year, 7-2 against them before today, but Jeremy Hermida's 2-run shot in the 1st inning puts the Phils in an early hole that they cannot climb out of. Marlins starter Josh Johnson retired the first 13 Phils in order before Pat Burrell gets the first Phillie hit and run on the same pitch with his 26th homer of the year, but that's all they can get. Striking out 14 times sure as hell won't help, and Marlins stopper Kevin Gregg adds to the whiff fest by striking out all five hitters he faces (Coste, Rollins, Victorino, Utley and Howard) to record the save.

Josh Johnson came through with a solid 7 innings at Citizen's Bank Park where
the Florida Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 2 to
1.

Florida took the lead off Jamie Moyer in the first inning when they tallied 2
runs on 3 hits. That early run support was enough for Johnson(1-2) and
Florida. Philadelphia proved to be no trouble in the bottom of the 9th.

Kevin Gregg gained credit for his 15th save. Moyer(9-9) was hit with the
loss. He pitched 6 innings allowing 4 hits and 1 walk.

August 5, 2008 Red Sox 3, Royals 1

Interesting matchup of starters today. Despite nearly identical won-loss records with the Royals' Brian Bannister at 5-8 and the Sox's Josh Beckett at 5-9, the ERAs tell the story. Beckett has just been a victim of bad luck with his 3.88 ERA and virtually no run support (his 3.95 RS is worst on the team), while Bannister has just sucked with a sky-high ERA of 7.02.. Beckett goes 7 2/3 innings of shutout ball, but Paps allows an unearned run in the 9th to lose the shutout and records his 21st save. Mike Lowell carries the Sox offense with a 2-run homerun and an RBI single to account for all 3 RBI.

JD Drew gets 3 hits falling a homerun shy of hitting a natural cycle, as he had a single in the 3rd, double in the 5th and triple in the 8th.

Josh Beckett(6-9) and Brian Bannister(5-9) locked horns in a pitcher's duel
with Beckett and the Boston Red Sox coming out on top of the Kansas City
Royals 3 to 1.

Beckett was very good in the win. He didn't give up much, just 5 hits and 2
walks in 7 and 2/3 innings improving his ERA from 3.88 to 3.65. Boston had 9
hits for the night while Kansas City had 6.

Beckett got help from Jonathan Papelbon who earned his 21st save.

August 4, 2008 Royals 7, Red Sox 4

A very sloppy Clay Buchholz puts the Sox in a 4-0 hole after just one inning, a hole the team can't climb out of. All kinds of craziness for Clay today, including two wild pitches (one letting a run score), a balk (only the second Sox balk of the season), a strikeout where the batter reached base when Varitek dropped the third strike for a passed ball, and 6 runs allowed before being yanked in the 3rd inning. Even Royals pitcher Gil Meche got into the craziness, committing two errors. One the normal way via fielding, and one throwing the ball past first on a pickoff attempt. First time ever in SOM that I can recall that a pitcher threw past first on a pickoff attempt.

Sean Casey and Jason Bay do their part, each with a two-run double, but it isn't enough.

August 3, 2008 Cardinals 6, Phillies 1

St. Louis averts a sweep by knocking around Brett Myers, as seven pitches into the ballgame the Phillies already trailed 3-0 via doubles by Skip Schumaker and Joe Mather along with an Albert Pujols 2-run dinger. Six doubles for the Cardinals along with the Pujols homerun for seven of their 13 hits going for extra bases. J.A. Happ stops the bleeding with 4 scoreless innings of relief, but unfourtunately the Philly offense sputters against Todd Wellemeyer getting only five hits as Wellemeyer goes the distance.

And don;t look now, but the Washington Nationals are one of the hottest teams in the league!! A 4-3, 10 inning win over the Reds today allows the Nationals to take two of three from Cincy, and along with taking two of three from the Phillies the previous series gives them two consecutive series wins for the first time this season! It doesn't anywhere even remotely come close to making up for their 3-22 slide (including a 14 game losing streak) immediately preceding the last two series, but for the 40 game below .500 team Nats any kind of winning streak is a good thing.

St. Louis jumped out to the early lead in the first inning with 3 runs
utilizing 4 base hits. Schumaker kicked off the action when he doubled. Joe
Mather came next and he doubled. Albert Pujols then lifted one out of the
park for a two run home run. Two outs later Yadier Molina stepped up to the
plate and he doubled. Aaron Miles struck out, unable to help the rally.
That was all the offense they were to need. St. Louis finished with 13 hits
in the victory.

The win went to Wellemeyer(11-7) who allowed 1 run in the game. The loss was
charged to Brett Myers(7-8). He was knocked around, surrendering 5 runs in 2
innings.

'Wellemeyer took our guys to school' Gary Lucas said. 'Too bad he doesn't
pitch for us - it would make my job a whole lot easier!'
