May 10, 2008 Twins 4, Red Sox 3 (10)

In a deep hole all game and down 3-0 entering the top of the 9th, the Sox tee off against Twins stopper Joe Nathan. After an out, a David Ortiz walk puts a runner on first. Manny smashes one to the deepest part of the Metrodome, but Carlos Gomez makes the leaping catch at the wall to rob Manny of the 2-run homer (check out the web gems!) and give the Twins the second out. Mike Lowell then gets a hold of one and whacks it high enough so no one but spectators reach it for a 2-run homer and narrow the gap to a run. Kevin Youkilis likes all this teeing of and smokes one into the seats for another homerun which ties the game, 3-all. If not for Gomez's catch, that would have given the Sox a 4-3 lead.

That leaping homer-robbing catch for Gomez proves to be very important for the Twins as after they go scoreless in the bottom of the 9th, Justin Morneau hits the game-winning homeruns for the Twins in the bottom of the 10th inning off of David Aardsma and gives Nathan the undeserved win. Were it not for the catch, there never would have been a 10th inning and the Sox would have won. Not often you can cough up 3 runs and the lead in the top of the 9th and still get the win in the game.
