| Josh Beckett pitches much more Beckett-like, only allowing a run through 7 innings, but received no help from his teammates as entering the 9th it looked like a hard-luck loss with a 1-0 Oriole lead. But the Sox come alive in the 9th off of George Sherrill, as Dustin Pedroia walks, steals second, goes to third on a Papi groundout and comes home with the tying run on a Manny single to tie the game, 1-all. It would stay that way until the top of the 13th. Peroia and Ortiz both hit singles, and Manny grounds one to Oriole thrid baseman Aubrey Huff. Huff throws on the run to try to get Manny at first, and the throw goes right on past first base into the dugout. The scorer gives Manny credit for a single, Pedroia comes home on the error with no RBI for Manny on the play, and the Sox take their first lead of the game 2-1. Jonathan Papelbon, who came into the game to squelch an Oriole threat in the bottom of the 12th, just stays on for the 13th and gets the win. This game was full of singles, as of the 22 hits between the team only 3 were for extra bases and no homeruns. The Orioles just returned to Baltimore from a 10 game road trip of their own, with this 2 game series being the 9th and 10th games of a long Sox road trip before they go back to Fenway. |
