In the longest Phillie game so far this season at 15 innings, the team comes alive in the top of the 15th putting 5 runs across the plate. I was faced with an interesting decision in that 15th inning when pitcher Clay Condrey came to the plate with runners on first and third and one out. Condrey was the last reliever in the bullpen when he came into the game in the bottom of the 14th. Not wanting to pinch-hit and have to have a starter come into the game in relief, Condrey bats. He did hit a double during the season in real life. Instead of bunting or trying a squeeze and the possible second out, I let him hit away...and he hits a double!! That knocked in the first run, with four more to follow. Jimmy Rollins, just back from the DL, has his bat finally come alive from the leadoff spot with a 3 for 7 day knocking in 4 runs and knocking in two more. |
