May 21, 2008 Nationals 4, Phillies 3

Lack of clutch hitting, base running mistakes, they all cost the Phillies big today as they lose a tight one to the Nats. All Nationals in the beginning, as Matt Chico pitches well for his 4th straight start (this time getting rewarded for it - details on that to follow) as the Nationals get all four runs off of Jamie Moyer and entering the top of the 8th inning, the Phillies trail 4-1. Then came one of the craziest innings I have ever had.

With Chico still on the mound and already over 100 pitches, Ryan Howard singles and Pat Burrell doubles for runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs. That ends Chico's day, and the Nats call on Joel Hanrahan from the bullpen. Jayson Werth rips a single to left with Howard scoring easily, but Wily Mo Pena comes up throwing as Pat Burrell comes around third, nailing Burrell at the plate for the first out. Now, 4-2 Nats. Werth goes to second on a Hanrahan wild pitch, and Pedro Feliz walks. Chris Coste rips another single to left, Werth motors around third heading for home but again Pena comes up throwing as Werth is thrown out at home for out number two as Feliz stops at second base. Pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs doubles to score Feliz as Coste wisely stops at third to make the score 4-3. Jimmy Rollins is intentionally walked to load the bases, and Shane Victorino, with his .423 average, cannot deliver getting the third out on a weak popup Chase Utley would lead off the 9th on a single and steal second, but Luis Ayala comes in and retires the final three hitters for the save.

As for Chico, he finally gets his first win of the year. He should have had it long before now however. In Chico's previous three starts, he pitched 19 innings only allowing two runs and all he had to show for it was two losses and a no-decision. Now for his last four starts, an ERA of 1.38 with only one win and two losses.

40,085 fans were treated to a fine game at Nationals Park as only one run
separated the combatants at game's end. The Washington Nationals won by the
slimmest of margins, 4 to 3.

Washington jumped on top of Philadelphia in the bottom of the 4th inning when
they scored 2 runs on 3 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Dmitri
Young who electrified Nationals Park when he delivered a one-base hit
bringing in two baserunners. Philadelphia had a chance in the 9th but they
came up short.

Matt Chico(1-6) went 7 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Chico got
relief help from Luis Ayala who gained credit for his 2nd save. Jamie
Moyer(5-4) was the loser.

'It was a tough one to lose' said Charlie Manual 'We'll get them next time
out.'
