| What a comeback by the Phillies! They were outhit 12-5 by the Astros, but three Astros caught stealing and a dramatic bottom of the 9th is what gives the Phils the win. All scoring on homeruns, with Humberto Quintero's solo shot and a 2-run smash for Geoff Blum giving the Astros the 3-0 lead. Everything seemed to be going Houston's way through 8 innings, with the 3-0 lead and Brandon Backe only allowing two hits, two walks and under 100 pitches entering the bottom of the 9th. So Taguchi leads off the 9th with a single and Jose Velarde comes in for Houston to try to nail down the win. Then all hell breaks loose: Velarde has the game saved with two outs and Tacuchi still at first. Ryan Howard then strikes, hitting one over the fence for a 2-run homerun to close the gap to 3-2. That totally unnerves Velarde, as he walks Pat Burrell. Geoff Genkins then plays the hero, getting a hold of one and plants it into the outfield seats for a 2-run walkoff homerun as the Phillies score 4 in the bottom of the 9th to win the game!!! With the crowd on their collective feet, screaming at the top of their lungs,
Philadelphia Phillies rallied to top Houston Astros by the score of 4 to
3.
Philadelphia scored the decisive runs in a big 9th inning as they scored 4
runs on 3 base hits. The key offensive moment was provided by Ryan Howard
who made the Philadelphia fans a happy lot when he lifted one out of the park
for a two run home run (his 6th of the season). Houston had 12 hits in the
game while Philadelphia had 5, but Philadelphia had the more timely hits.
Brad Lidge(1-0) got credit for the victory, pitching 1 inning and allowing no
runs. Jose Valverde(0-2) was given the loss in relief. He allowed 2 hits and
1 walk in 2/3 of an inning.
Lidge and So Taguchi were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after the
great come from behind victory. As Charlie Manual noted, 'A win like this
one can do wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the
fans, the players - even you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen
runs!'
