April 19, 2008 Athletics 1, Royals 0

In a classic 1-0 game, Zack Greinke or the Royals and Greg Smith of the A's do battle in one for the ages. Only three hits for the game between the two teams combined, with A's catcher Kurt Suzuki getting two of them. The only run of the game came on a solo homerun in the 4th for the A's Daric Barton. Now, since all three hits were by the A's, that tells you what? Greg Smith tosses a no-hitter!! The first no-no in the SOM restart, after having three already in the old season.

Also of interest, Smith is a rookie and this is only his third major league start! I did a little research, and as we know already, that isn't the earliest no-hitter in a career as Clay Buchholz got the one for the Red Sox in his second major league start in 2007. Buchholz is one of two players who have a no-hitter in their second start with the other being Wilson Alvarez in 1991. Two also have a no-hitter in their first career start, Bumpus Jones (who?) in 1892 and Bobo Holliman in 1953. Jones only appeared in 8 major league games, and Holliman in only three. Alvarez had a decent career, Buchholz has yet to do anything besides the no-hitter, and the other two didn't even last a season.

Lost in the shuffle was the spectacular start for Greinke, who got the loss which in any other game would have undoubtedly been a win. He had no chance at a no-hitter as Suzuki led off the game with a single, but as previously mentioned Greinke only allowed the 3 hits, one run and struck out 10 going the distance in the very, very hard-luck loss.

I don't know if the link will come through in the blog, but I found a list of rookies who have pitched no-hitters. Some well-known names in the list, along with some not so well known.

History was made in Oakland as Greg Smith(2-1) tossed a no-hitter and the
Oakland Athletics defeated the Kansas City Royals by the score of 1 to
0.

Smith had an afternoon to remember. Heck, it's one we'll all remember! What a
game at McAfee Coliseum! He walked 2 Kansas City batters. The tension was
mounting with every inning after the 6th. Smith appeared oblivious himself
to the mounting history until two were out in the 9th. Only then, did he
allow himself one deep sigh and a slow trip around the mound. Oakland had
only 3 hits for the afternoon.

Zack Greinke(1-1) was given the loss. He gave up just 1 run and 3 hits in 8
innings. 'I gave it everything I had. It's probably the greatest day of my
life,' Smith said. 'I was out there focusing on my catcher's glove, that's
all. I just concentrated on pitching my game.'
