| In a game with a very misleading final score, Cole Hamels and Johan Santana treated the fans to an intense pitchers duel. The only run of the game scored when Hamels knocked in Eric Bruntlett with a single after Bruntlett has doubled in the 3rd inning, and through the first 6 innings 1-0 Phillies was the score. Both Hamels and Santana were smoking right along. In what I thought was a shock, Santana was pinch-hit for in the top of the 6th inning. Yes the Mets were trailing 1-0 at the time, but Santana wasn't even to 60 pitches yet and the previously mentioned 3rd inning hits were the only runners off him. Hamels starts to run out of gas a bit in the 7th allowing a couple of runners, and Tom Gordon fails to do his job allowing both to score to give the Mets the 2-1 lead. Then came the collapse, as Gordon, Rudy Seanez and Chad Durbin suck the joint out in the top of the 8th as the Mets get 7 runs to put the game out of reach. Gordon's line for the game of 1/3 inning, 2 walks, one hit and 2 runs allowed in addition to the two inherited runners. Seanez is even worse, with 1/3 of an inning 3 hits 2 walks and 5 runs allowed with two of Gordon's inherited runners in there. Durbin comes in with the bases loaded and allows all three inherited runners to score, which are all charged to Seanez, but allows no further damage the rest of the game. Chase Utley tosses in a solo homerun for his 6th of the year in garbage time for the Phillies in the bottom of the 9th, and 9-2 is the final. Johan Santana came through with a solid 5 innings and catcher Brian Schneider
had 2 base hits at Citizen's Bank Park where the New York (NL) Mets beat the
Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 9 to 2.
In the 7th inning New York (NL) went on top for good when they tallied 2 runs
on 4 hits. New York (NL) totaled 10 hits on the night.
The winning pitcher was Aaron Heilman(1-2) who allowed no runs in 1 and 2/3
innings. Cole Hamels(0-3) absorbed the loss. He surrendered 2 runs and 4
hits in 6 and 2/3 innings.
