April 10, 2008 Mets 9, Phillies 4

The Mets run all over the Phillies, as they had no chance today against last year's NL SOM Cy Young Award winner John Maine. Adam Eaton gets ripped for 4 runs in the 1st inning, gets through a spotless 2nd, and sucks from there before being mercifully lifted in the 4th after allowing 8 runs and 8 hits. I tried to get as much out of Eaton as I could due to a tired bullpen, but finally couldn't wait any longer to yank him. That tired bullpen led to two relievers getting atbats in the game, including an RBI double for Clay Condrey. Defense played a big role in the game, the web gems speak for themselves.

Maine strikes out 10, and holds the Phillies in check with a Pat Burrell homer as the only damage until he tires in the 8th. 3 walks, a 2-run double for Ryan Howard and Condrey's double in that 8th inning knock Maine from the game, and ex-Phillie Billy Wagner finishes up in the non-save situation.

A nice long homestand awaits the Phillies after 7 of the first 10 games on the road, with the Cubs, Astros and Mets coming to town for the next nine games.

John Maine struck out 10 batters and Ryan Church had 3 base hits and 3 RBI at
Shea Stadium where the New York (NL) Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9 to
4.

Maine(1-0) gave a fine effort for New York (NL). He surrendered 5 hits and 5
walks in 7 and 2/3 innings. New York (NL) finished with 10 hits while
Philadelphia ended up with 5.

Adam Eaton(1-1) was given the loss. He got hit hard, allowing 8 hits and 2
walks in 3 and 1/3 innings. Jerry Manuel was asked about the performance of
Maine, 'He had his good stuff out there tonight. The fans really get into it
when the strikeouts start mounting up - and that seems to give him even more
adrenalin.'
