April 4, 2008 Blue Jays 11, Red Sox 8

The Sox play in their third country (Japan, the USA and Canada) in their first 5 games, and multiple hitting stars on both sides in a slugfest. Manny is the best with a 5 for 5 day falling a double shy of hitting for the cycle. The top of the Sox order finally comes alive as Dustin Pedroia rips a double and a homer and David Ortiz scores twice without benefit of a hit. Jacoby Ellsbury gets a triple and a homer, but a caught stealing for Ellsbury did cost the Sox a run as the Pedroia homer was two batters later.

The big hits were on the Blue Jays side of the ball, with a 3-run shot for Lyle Overbay in the 1st inning and another 3-run blast for Vernon Wells in the 4th. Wells' shot knocks a very ineffective Tim Wakefield from the game as Wake allows 8 of the runs, walks 4 batters and throws two wild pitches in 3+ innings in the loss.

At Rogers Centre the Toronto Blue Jays registered 5 runs in the 4th inning and
outscored the Boston Red Sox 11 to 8.

Toronto took the lead off Tim Wakefield in the first inning when they tallied
4 runs on 3 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Lyle Overbay who made
the Toronto fans a happy lot when he smacked a three-run homer (his 1st of
the season). Toronto ended up with 16 hits for the game while Boston had 12.

The winning pitcher was Shaun Marcum(1-0) who allowed 7 runs in 5 and 2/3
innings. Marcum got help from Brandon League who was credited with his 1st
save. Wakefield(0-1) was tagged with the loss. He allowed a few too many
baserunners giving up 9 hits and 4 walks in 3 innings.
