April 4, 2008 Reds 11, Phillies 9 (10)

The first extra inning game of the year for the Phillies is a thriller, just not the way I wanted it, as Edwin Encarnacion gets three huge hits for the Reds at just the right times, knocking in 8 runs for the day. Four runs in the Reds 1st inning (3 on a 3-run homerun for Encarnacion) give them a quick 4-0 lead, but Kyle Kendrick settles down after that as the Phillies mount the comeback with 2 in the 2nd, 3 in the 3rd, and single runs in the 4th and 5th to take the 7-4 lead. Encarnaccion gets big hit number two in the Reds 8th, when he cleans the bases of Reds with a 3-run triple off of Rudy Seanez to tie the game, 7-7.

The agony comes in the 10th inning. Two bases loaded walks gives the Phillies the 9-7 lead, and Ryan Madson comes in for the bottom of the 10th as Tom Gordon was pinch-hit for in the 9th to try for the save. However, Madson cannot retire a batter as the Reds explode with singles for Brandon Phillips and Adam Dunn. Encarnaccion strikes again as he gets big hit number three with a 2-run double as the Reds tie it, and next batter Joey Votto wins it for Cincinnati with a walkoff 2-run homerun. Agonizing, just agonizing.

To sum it up for Encarnacion, 3 for 5 day falling of all thinkgs a single shy of the cycle with a 3-run homerun to give the Reds the quick lead in the 1st, a bases loaded triple in the 8th to tie it, and a 2-run double in the 10th to tie the game again after the Phillies took a 2 run lead in the top of the 10th.
