April 6, 2008 Reds 3, Phillies 1

Red-hot Shane Victorino continues to sizzle stealing his 6th base of the young season going 3 for 4 while scoring the only Phillie run and a .571 average for the year so far, but Edinson Volquez holds the Phils in check by striking out 10 over his 7 innings of work as the Phils lose a squeaker. Brett Myers doesn't do too bad in the loss only allowing 2 runs in 6 innings, but when your team only scores one run behind you it is hard to get a win. Adam Dunn's homerun in the 8th for the Reds give them a little breathing room, and it holds up.

Despite Victorino having his in every game and a gaudy .571 average, he does NOT lead the league in batting. Matt Holliday of the Rockies is even better, with an incredible .619 average, and Mike Sweeney of the A's leads all of baseball at .636!! Sweeney was only a part-time player, so that won't lead the league for too long. Of course, not even 10 games have been played but still pretty impressive numbers nonetheless.

Speaking of strikeouts, here is what I think is an amazing statistic. So far in the first six games of the season, Ryan Howard has not struck out once! Amazing considering the fact that he was 1 K shy of 200 for the real season.

Edinson Volquez mowed down 10 Philadelphia batters at Great American Bpk where
the Cincinnati Reds beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the score of 3 to
1.

Volquez(1-0) had a strong outing. He allowed only 5 hits and no walks in 7
innings. Philadelphia threatened in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Francisco Cordero recorded the save, his 2nd. Brett Myers(1-1) was the losing
pitcher. He surrendered 7 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings.

Charlie Manual was upset after the game. 'I don't like to complain but did
you see that umpires strike zone?', he said. 'Maybe they ought to start
calling the strike zone the way it's printed in the rule book.'
