April 4, 2008 Nationals 20, Cardinals 5

I thought you would appreciate this one, as 5 runs in the top of the 1st inning knock Cards starter Braden Looper from the game and the Nats batters take assault on 7 Cardinal pitchers, scoring 20 times. Gargantuan efforts from two pitchers, Nationals starter Odalis Perez with an 8 inning 158 pitch effort, and Cardinals reliever Brad Thompson left in for a shellacking at 87 pitches and 3 innings. Thompson and the pitcher before him, Ron Villone, combine for the final 5 innings of the game. Those 5 innings involve 11 hits, 10 runs, 8 walks and 134 pitches!!

Those 20 runs are one shy of the team record for runs scored in a game, with the record being a 21-9 victory the Colorado Rockies in 1996 when the team was obviously still in Montreal. As a bit of an added bonus, I put in the link to the box score of that game. You will remember some of these Expos names I am sure. Hopefully the link comes through okay.

Ronnie Belliard had 4 hits and 5 RBI at Busch Stadium as the Washington
Nationals, running on all cylinders, ripped the St. Louis Cardinals by a
large 20 to 5 margin.

Belliard had a good evening at the plate. He doubled in the 1st inning,
lashed a single resulting in a run in the 4th inning, stroked a one-base hit
in the 7th inning and doubled plating three runs in the 8th inning.
Washington provided plenty of action in the 1st inning which saw them plate 5
runs on 6 hits and the 8th inning when they had 7 runs on 6 hits. Washington
out-hit St. Louis for the game, 23 hits to 8.

Odalis Perez(2-0) went 8 innings allowing 5 runs for the victory. Braden
Looper(0-1) was the losing pitcher. He pitched 1 inning and surrendered 6
hits and no walks.
