| Cole Hamels stymies the Nationals through the first 5 innings, only allowing one hit and no runs despite 3 errors committed behind him, but defense of the non-error variety costs the team in the 6th. With a 1-0 Phillie lead, Ryan Zimmerman singles and Nick Johnson doubles for runners on 2nd and 3rd. Austin Kearns lifts a fly to left field, right to the 5 range fielding Pat Burrell. Burrell can't get to the ball, and it rolls all the way to the fence. By the time Kearns stops, he is at third base with a stand-up triple as the two runners cross the plate. Paul lo Duca knocks Kearns in with a sac fly, suddenly 3-1 Nats. Chase Utley gives the Phillies a run back in the bottom of the 6th with a leadoff solo shot which would spell the end of Tim Redding's day, but that's all they can get. Luis Ayala, Chad Cordero, Jesus Colome and Joel Hanrahan hold the Phils the rest of the way, with Hanrahan striking out Jimmy Rollins and Utley in the 9th to earn his first major league save. There were quite a few times last season in my SOM when it seemed like Burrell's defense cost the team some runs and a few games. Last year, he was a 4 range but a high e rating, as he made 15 errors in SOM play (10 in real life). After a while, I got sick of it and someone else would come in late as a defensive replacement in left field late in the game if the score was close. Burrell didn't hit worth a shit for me last year either, only batted .228. His 35 homers made up for some of the defensive miscues, but 15 errors seems like a hell of a lot for an outfielder. Having that 5 range out there the majority of the time this year might spell some trouble now and then, like it did today. |

The Washington Nationals edged the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizen's Bank
Park by the score of 3 to 2.
Philadelphia lost it in the 6th inning when Washington did all their damage as
they scored 3 runs on 3 base hits. The critical plate appearance was by
Austin Kearns who silenced Citizen's Bank Park as he tripled plating two
runs. Both teams finished the game with 6 hits.
Tim Redding(1-0) went 5 innings allowing 2 runs for the victory. Joel Hanrahan
recorded his 1st save. Cole Hamels(0-1) was the loser. He gave up 3 runs
and 5 hits in 6 and 1/3 innings.
