April 27, 2008 Rays 8, Red Sox 4

The winning streak for the Red Sox ends at 6 games, as they are never in this one today. Twice in the first three inning the Sox hit into inning-ending doubleplays with a runner on third base, and sloppy defense leads to two unearned Rays run on a Jason Varitek passed ball and a JD Drew error throwing home. Drew does make up for his error by smashing a 3-run homer 1/2 inning later knocking Rays starter Jason Shields from the game in the 8th, but too little too late.

A three game series in Fenway is next on the schedule against the division leading Blue Jays, who the Sox trail by 2 1/2 games. The Jays (19-7) and Sox (17-10) have the two best records in the AMericam League at this point in the season. By coincidence, the two best records in the National League are also in the same division, with the Cardinals (19-7) and Cubs (18-7) half a game apart in the NL Central. Interesting how the Blue Jays always seem to do well in my SOM being the wildcard a few times, even though in real life they haven't made the playoffs since winning the World Series 16 years ago.

BTW the Washington Nationals lost their 10th straight game today, losing to the Cubs, and own baseball's worst record at 7-19.
