May 4, 2008 Red Sox 5, Rays 4 (10)

You may notice that a date in the blog, May 3rd and the Phillies game on the 2nd, were not blogged. Two bolts of lightning struck in the backyard very close to the house and knocked our cable, phone and internet out for about 24 hours until it was fixed earlier this afternoon. Nothing worth blogging anyway. The Phillies lost both days to the red-hot Giants 10-4 and 3-2 to continue their recent 2-7 slump. In the game on the 3rd, the Phils left the bases loaded in both the 8th and 9th innings unable to come through with the clutch hit to tie or take the lead in the game. The Sox lost the game on the 3rd to the Rays 5-2 for their third straight loss.

In today's game, Jon Lester finally got some runs to work with (his 4.50 run support is lowest among the starters), but made two huge mistake pitches on a solo homerun for Jonny Gomes in the 2nd and a huge 3-run bomb for Akinori Iwamura which tied the game 4-4 in the 4th inning. The score stayed 4-4 until the Sox come through in the bottom of the 10th. With one out, Jacoby Ellsbury singles and steals second. Dustin Pedroia can't help and as he grounds out on what would have been a double play grounder if not for the steal for out number two, and Kevin Youkilis comes through with the walk-off double as Ellsbury trots home with the winning run. Papelbon gets the win as he came in to pitch because he hasn't pitched in a week with the Sox slide.

Ellsbury's recent 16-for-29 hot streak has enabled him to go above teammate Julio Lugo and gives Jacoby the AL batting race lead over Julio, .388 to .387. Lugo we know won't be on top at the end even if he bats like this since he will be done for the year in mid-July, but I'll enjoy it while it's here.
