April 29, 2008 Phillies 5, Padres 3

The Pads put the Phillies in a deep hole early when Adrian Gonzalez smokes a 3-ruh bomb off of Cole Hamels in the 1st inning, but the Phils storm back in the bottom of the 2nd and tie the game on back-to-back homers for Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell along with a Carlos Ruiz RBI single. The go-ahead, and winning run, for the Phillies comes across in the 6th inning as Pedro Feliz scores from second on a Carlos Ruiz single, with an overthrow of home allowing Ruiz to go to second base (the run is earned, since Feliz was going to score anyway). An insurance run comes across in the 7th, and 5-3 is the final. Brad Lidge goes the 9th for his 5th save, and remains unscored upon for the season now at 10 innings of work.

This was a battle of young vs. old today, with the 24 year old Hamels on the mound for the Phillies and 42 year old Greg Maddux (his 42nd birthday was April 14th) taking the hill for the Padres. Maddux's better days apparently are behind him as he takes the loss to fall to 0-6 on the season with an ERA over 6.00. When Maddux began his career in 1986, Hamels was only 2 1/2 years old!

Additional note of interest - I noticed that Maddux had a stolen base during the season, kind of unusual for a pitcher especially for a guy who is in his 40s. Checking out baseballreference, Maddux it turns out has had at least one steal six of the last seven years and 11 for his career!

In a good matchup it was the Philadelphia Phillies 5, the San Diego Padres 3
at Citizen's Bank Park.

San Diego was unable to recover after Philadelphia went ahead in the bottom of
the 6th inning scoring a single run using 2 hits. Pedro Feliz doubled.
Carlos Ruiz next to the plate and he delivered a base-hit, and an error was
also committed. After an out was recorded, Jayson Werth came to the plate
and drew a walk. Eric Bruntlett stepped in and he grounded into a double
play. For the game Philadelphia out-hit San Diego 11 to 7.

Cole Hamels(2-3) went 7 innings allowing 3 runs for the victory. Brad Lidge
earned the save, his 5th. Greg Maddux(0-6) took the loss. He got hit pretty
hard, allowing 9 hits and 4 walks in 5 and 1/3 innings.

With this win, Philadelphia has a 13-14 record. They have been 5-5 lately.
With the loss San Diego now has a record of 15-12.
