May 5, 2008 Phillies 7, Diamondbacks 2

In another battle of young vs. old, 23 year old Arizona pitcher Max Scherzer makes his major league debut against 45 year old Jamie Moyer. Scherzer holds his own for the first 6 innings, shutting down the Phillies while the D'Backs get a couple of runs and lead 2-0 entering the 7th. Scherzer walks the first two batters in the 7th and allows a single, ending his day with the 2-0 lead, and the Arizona bullpen falls apart giving the Phillies 7 runs over the final three innings of the game as the Phils win easily.

Ryan Howard and Mark Reynolds, the strikeout kings, surprisingly only struck out once betwen the two of them. Why are they called the strikeout kings? We all know about Howard's whiffing (199 in real life) but Reynolds puts that to shame as he became the first player ever to strike out more than 200 times with a total of 204 in real life! Putting that in batting average perspective, Howard's would be a .326, but Reynolds puts that to shame too coming in with a .378 whiff percentage! If you look at the top 10 strikeout totals for batters in one season, all but two have been since 2000 and the top 4 have been in the past two years (Reynolds 204, Howard 199 in both '07 and '08 and Jack Cust with 197 in '08).

Fun fact for the day: When Jamie Moyer made his major league debut for the Chicago Cubs in 1986, his opponent today Max Scherzer was still in diapers one month shy of his 2nd birthday!!!

Field where the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks by the
score of 7 to 2.
