| The typical slow Phillies start for the first month at 13-15, 4th in the division and 5 1/2 back from first. The batting has been a bit off with only a .245 team average, third worst in the NL. As for the pitching, it has been okay but not spectacular at an ERA of 4.65. Plenty of bright spots though with Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Pat Burrell tying for the team lead in homeruns at 8 apiece. That also puts each of them in a 7-way tie for 3rd in the NL. Shane Victorino just returned from injury at the end of the month, so he can put that.462 batting average back to work. Jimmy Rollins is also due back shortly, and hopefully he can improve on his horrific .162 slump to begin the year. Leadoff has not been kind to Phillie hitters, as Rollins and whoever has betted leadoff in his abscence combine for a .220 average, not quite what you want from the leadoff spot in the order. Bad to be a Phillie cather too, and one of these guys has to play each day. Chris Coste is batting .205 and Carlos Ruiz at a horrid .127. |
