April 16, 2008 Phillies 9, Astros 1

Ryan Howard flexes his muscle with a 2 homerun 5 RBI day as the Phillies beat up on the Astros and the struggling Roy Oswalt. Houston did score first when former Phillie Michael Bourn rips the first pitch of the game into the seats, but the Phillies take control from there. Howard smokes a 2-run shot in the 3rd and goes one better with a 3-run blast in the 4th which knocks Oswalt from the game. An interesting 5th inning gives the Phillies two more runs when pitcher Kyle Kendrick attempts a sac bunt with runners on second and third, and Astros first baseman Lance Berkman throws the ball over first nase trying to get Kendrick as a run comes home. A wild pitch to the next batter brings one more run home for 2 runs with no RBI's. The line for Oswalt for the game - 3 2/3 inn, 8 hits and 6 runs to drop his record to 0-3 and an ERA of over 7 and a half. Not what the Astros want at this point from their best pitcher, I am sure.

Chase Utley caps the scoring on a solo homer in the 6th, part of a 4 for 5 day where Utley falls a triple shy of the cycle. Another interesting stat - Pat Burrell, despite being held hitless, does score a run as he walked once. Burrell leads the major leagues at this point in walks with 19, four more than the next highest player. Only three other players have more than 13.

April 16, 2008 Yankees 7, Red Sox 5

A very painful loss, as the Sox had control throughout until the end. Clay Buchholz was a very lucky man through the first four innings, as the Yankees had the bases loaded and one out in the 2nd, runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out in the 3rd, and 2nd and 3rd again with one out in the 4th inning, and came up empty all three times. Meanwhile, the Sox bust through in the 5th inning with four runs. I tried to get Buchholz through the 5th at least so he could be in line for the win, but after allowing 3 singles, a double play grounder and another single allowing two runs and already over 100 pitches, it became obvious he wasn't gonna make it and Julian Tavarez came on in relief.

Now a 5-2 Sox lead entering the Yankees 7th, the Bronx Bombers get to Tavarez for a couple of runners so lefty Javier Lopez comes on to face the Yankees lefties. Lopez can't deliever, goes HBP, walk, single before getting an out and David Aardsma comes in. By now three runs have crossed the plate which have tied the score. Aardsma goes the rest of the 7th unscathed, but walks Bobby Abreu in the 8th followed by an A-Rod homerun to give the Yanks the 7-5 lead. Paps comes in to put out the fire and save the rest of the inning, but the Sox are no match for Mariano Rivera in the 9th as he goes 1-2-3 to save the win for New York.

Julio Jugo goes the 0-fer today to have his season long 15 game hitting streak snapped, but Kevin Youkilis has made everyone forget about his horrible start. After his 2 for 28, .071 beginning he has come on like gangbusters and over the last 8 games is ripping at a .516 clip (16 for 31), including 4 homers. A perfect 3 for 3 for Youk today, including a walk

New York (AL) erupted with the game winning runs in the bottom of the 8th
inning scoring 2 runs. After an out was recorded, Bobby Abreu was the
sparkplug when he drew a walk. Rodriguez came to the plate and bombed a
two-run dinger (his 3rd of the season). Hideki Matsui dug into the batters
box next, but he struck out. Mariano Rivera relieved and was untouched by
Boston as he recorded the save, his 7th.

Kyle Farnsworth(1-1) picked up the victory, allowing no runs in 2 and 2/3
innings. David Aardsma(1-1) was given the loss in relief. He surrendered 2
runs and 1 hit in 1 inning.

April 15, 2008 Phillies 16, Astros 7

The Phillies walk all over the Astros, literally, as the Houston pitchers walk 12. In the first 2 innings the Phillies score 5 runs on only two hits, as a Pat Burrell homerun following two walks gets 3 home in the 1st inning, and a walk followed by an Eric Bruntlett homer brings 2 more home in the 2nd. Not done yet, the Phillies get 4 runs in the 6th and 6 more in the 7th. Burrell's second homerun of the game immediately followed by a homer by Geoff Jenkins accounts for three of the six 7th inning runs, and Chase Utley ads a homerun of his own in the 6th.

More than enough runs for even Adam Eaton to work with, as he records his second win of the year despite allowing 5 runs in 5 2/3 innings. Eaton goes to 2-1 on the year, with an ERA of 9.00!!

April 15, 2008 Red Sox 8, Indians 3

Future Sox teammate Paul Byrd was smoking right along for the Indians allowing no hits through the first 4 innings with a Travis Hafner homer giving the Tribe the 1-0 lead in the 1st, but the Sox come alive in the 5th getting 3 runs. The Indians tie the game up in the bottom of the 6th, and Coco Crisp rips a 2-run homerun in the top of the 7th as the Sox retake the lead. A Julio Lugo 2-run double and Kevin Cash RBI single give the Sox some insurance runs that they ended up not needing in the 8th, and 8-3 is the final.

The Red Sox win their 6th straight, and Lugo's 3 for 4 day ups his average to .490 to lead the American League and with hits in every game so far extends his hitting streak to 14 games.

the 7th inning when they scored 2 runs on 2 hits. The key at-bat was by Coco
Crisp who silenced the crowd when he popped a two-run clout over the fence
(his 1st of the season). For the game Boston out-hit Cleveland 9 to 5.

The victory was credited to Manny Delcarmen(1-0) who went 2 and 1/3 innings,
allowing no runs. Paul Byrd(0-1) took the loss. Boston continued on their
recent roll, their winning streak now reaching 6 games and counting.

April 14, 2008 Red Sox 13, Indians 3

Revenge is sweet as the Sox rip the Indians in the first game of a two game mini-series, trying to avenge for the first round playoff losses to the Tribe the last three seasons. The scoreboard is lit up as the balls go flying out of the park as the Red Sox get a season high for runs. Kevin Youkilis has the biggest day, ripping 2 homeruns and a double for a 4 for 5, 5 RBI, 4 run day. Dustin Pedroia throws his two cents worth in with a homer and also a 4 for 5 day knocking in 3 runs. JD Drew and Manny Ramirez add their shots in for 5 Sox homeruns in the game.

Blessed with some runs behind him finally, Jon Lester is able to get his first win of the year as despite not allowing more than three runs in any of his previous three starts including losses of 3-2 and 1-0 scores, all he had to show for it was an 0-2 record.

Third baseman Kevin Youkilis rocketed 2 homeruns and had 5 RBI at Progressive
Field as the Boston Red Sox, running on all cylinders, ripped the Cleveland
Indians by a large 13 to 3 margin.

Youkilis provided much of the offense. He smashed a solo-shot out of the park
in the 2nd inning, belted a three-run homer (his 3rd of the season) in the
3rd inning, doubled bringing in a run in the 8th inning and delivered a
base-hit in the 9th inning. Boston had many opportunities throughout the
game and scored in 6 separate innings.

The victory went to Jon Lester(1-2) who went 6 and 2/3 innings, allowing 3
runs. Jake Westbrook(2-1) suffered the loss. He served up 3 homeruns in his
7 innings.

'I've spent a lot of time in the cage and made some adjustments and they've
paid off,' Youkilis said. 'I just take the same approach up there. I don't
overanalyze it. I go up there, see the ball and try to put a good swing on
it.'

provided by Lance Berkman. He lined a single in the 3rd inning, hit a
bases-empty home run (his 3rd of the season) in the 4th inning and doubled
scoring two baserunners in the 5th inning. Houston totaled 13 hits on the
afternoon.

The victory went to Rodriguez(1-0) who went the distance allowing 2 runs.
Burke Badenhop(0-1) was hit with the loss. He was touched for 7 hits and 2
walks in 4 innings.

'Everything felt great' Rodriguez said. 'I had a good fastball, I felt I could
throw it by everybody today.'

April 13, 2008 Red Sox 8, Yankees 4

Daisuke Matsuzaka lives up to the K part of his Dice-K nickname, as he strikes out 2 batters in each of the first 5 innings and 10 for the game as the Sox sweep the Yanks. Due to already being over 100 pitches Matsuzaka only goes 6 innings, still good enough for his 3rd win of the young season. Even with the Sox winning by 4 runs and Jonathan Papelbon allowing a run in the top of the 9th, Paps still gets the save as he entered the game with a 3 run lead and two outs in the 8th inning. The Sox score two runs in the bottom of the inning, Paps gives the Yankees one back and the Sox win by four runs and save number 3.

Some very impressive batting numbers for the Red Sox so far on the season. Julio Lugo leads the AL in batting at .488 (2 for 4 today), Coco Crisp a nice .370 (3 for 4), Jason Varitek a surprising .300 (3 for 4), and Sean Casey in his action so far in 20 atbats at .400 (2 for 3). Despite all those impressive numbers, the team BA is only at .286 thanks to the sub-.200 averages for JD Drew (.162), Big Papi (.163), and Kevin Youkilis's .213. Papi and Youk have been getting hot lately along with the team as a whole, so no need for panic.

Matsuzaka(3-1) gave a fine effort for Boston. He allowed 6 hits and 2 walks
in 6 innings. Boston had 14 hits overall, while New York (AL) had 11.

Jonathan Papelbon earned the save, his 3rd. Phil Hughes(1-2) was the losing
pitcher. He was unable to control the Boston offense and allowed 9 hits and
2 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.

Matsuzaka was jubilant in the hometown clubhouse, 'It was a lot of fun out
there. The fans gave me a lot of support as did my teammates. We got the
victory and I'll sure take 10 strikeouts anytime!'

April 13, 2008 Cubs 7, Phillies 4

The Cubs take two of the three games in the series, again jumping straight out in front before the Phillies even get a chance to bat with an Aramis Ramirez 2-run single in the 1st inning. Pat Burrell's 4th homer of the year, a 2-run shot in the 7th, makes the score 5-4 Cubbies but Chicago strikes right back getting 2 in the top of the 8th. Kerry Wood goes the final two innings, getting the save. Jamie Moyer gets his first loss of the year allowing 4 runs through 6 innings of work.

Plenty of chances for the Phillies though, as the Cubs pitchers walk 8 and 3 errors in the field lead to only one of the runs the Phils scored being earned, but leaving 11 runners stranded on the basepaths dooms them to being on the short end of the stick.

Center fielder Reed Johnson had 3 base hits and 2 RBI as the Chicago (NL) Cubs
defeated the Philadelphia Phillies by a score of 7 to 4 at Citizen's Bank
Park.

Chicago (NL) jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they scored
2 runs on 3 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Aramis Ramirez who
silenced the crowd when he lined a single scoring two baserunners. Overall
Chicago (NL) out-hit Philadelphia 11 to 5.

The winning pitcher was Jason Marquis(2-0) who allowed 4 runs in 6 and 1/3
innings. Kerry Wood got the save, his 2nd. Jamie Moyer(2-1) was given the
loss.

April 12, 2008 Cubs 8, Phillies 1

No chance at all for the Phillies today, with the Cubs scoring 4 runs in the very first inning off of Cole Hamels. Leadoff batter Alfonzo Soriano rips one into the seats on the very first pitch, Mark Derosa adds a solo shot of his own, and two other runs score on a sac fly and a groundout. Hamels settles down nicely after the 1st inning debacle until being pinch-hit for in the 6th. Ryan Madson and Tom Gordon each allow 2 runs in the 8th and 9th respectively. Madson's runs come on a bases loaded hit batter and walk to consecutive batters, while Aramis Ramirez hit a 2-run hoemrun off of Gordon.

Chicago's Ted Lilly has no trouble with the Phillie batters, allowing only a run through his 8 innings of work. Could have been more, but Chase Utley twice lined into doubleplays with the runner on second being doubled off each time to end two seperate innings.

April 12, 2008 Red Sox 12, Yankees 3

David Ortiz finally busts out of his season long slump in a big way, on a 3 for 5 day including his first homerun of the year and knocks in 4 runs as the Sox steamroll their way to victory. Numerical order in scoring today, as the Sox get one run in the 1st inning, 2 runs in the 2nd inning, 3 runs in the 4th inning then seem to forget about the numbers 4 and 5, flying ahead to a 6 run 6th inning when they send 11 men to the plate. All that scoring is more than enough for Josh Beckett to record his first win of the year. Beckett allows one run in 6th, and was lifted after walking the first 2 batters in the 7th. Manny Declarmen and Hideki Okajima finish up uneventfully, save for a 2-run Robinson Cano homerun in the 8th with one run charged to each pitcher.

A couple of interesting bonehead base running moves by the Yankees, both occuring in the 3rd inning. Bobby Abreu doubles and is picked off second on the hidden ball trick (no, I am not kidding!!) and A-Rod is picked off first base the conventional way after hitting a single.

Designated hitter David Ortiz hit a homerun and had 4 RBI at Fenway Park as
the Boston Red Sox beat the New York (AL) Yankees 12 to 3.

Ortiz had a big day at the plate. He delivered a base-hit resulting in a run
in the 1st inning, belted a three-run homer (his 1st of the season) in the
4th inning and lined a single in the 6th inning. Boston finished with 19
hits while New York (AL) ended up with 8.

The victory went to Josh Beckett(1-1) who went 6 innings, allowing 1 run. Mike
Mussina(2-1) was charged with the loss. He was hit hard and gave up 10 hits
and 2 walks in 4 and 2/3 innings.

Boston now has a record of 6-6. With this loss, New York (AL) has a 5-5
record of late, 6-6 overall.

April 11, 2008 Phillies 5, Cubs 4

The Phils fall behind after an inning and a half 3-0 as the Cubs use Brett Myers for target practice, but Myers settles down and the relievers come through while the offense mounts the comeback. JC Romero gets credit for the relief win, coming into the game with runners on second and third and one out by only throwing three pitches and getting two quick outs in the 6th. At the time the Cubs led 4-3, but Eric Bruntlett rips a 2-run single through the Cubs drawn in infield in the bottom of the 6th to give the Phillies the 5-4 lead, and that holds up as the final. Brad Lidge gets a 1-2-3 9th inning for his first save as a Phillie.

April 10, 2008 Mets 9, Phillies 4

The Mets run all over the Phillies, as they had no chance today against last year's NL SOM Cy Young Award winner John Maine. Adam Eaton gets ripped for 4 runs in the 1st inning, gets through a spotless 2nd, and sucks from there before being mercifully lifted in the 4th after allowing 8 runs and 8 hits. I tried to get as much out of Eaton as I could due to a tired bullpen, but finally couldn't wait any longer to yank him. That tired bullpen led to two relievers getting atbats in the game, including an RBI double for Clay Condrey. Defense played a big role in the game, the web gems speak for themselves.

Maine strikes out 10, and holds the Phillies in check with a Pat Burrell homer as the only damage until he tires in the 8th. 3 walks, a 2-run double for Ryan Howard and Condrey's double in that 8th inning knock Maine from the game, and ex-Phillie Billy Wagner finishes up in the non-save situation.

A nice long homestand awaits the Phillies after 7 of the first 10 games on the road, with the Cubs, Astros and Mets coming to town for the next nine games.
