June 6, 2008 Rangers 18, Rays 7

The most amazing thing about this game is not the fact that Texas scored 18 runs, or that the two teams had almost the same amount of hits each (14-13), but at the 7th inning stretch Tampa seemed to be on cruise control for a win with a 7-2 lead!!!!! The Rangers go on a 16 run rampage in the 7th inning sending 21 batters to the plate. Most amazing is the fact that the first two batters got out! The big shots in the inning were a grand slam homerun for Chris Shelton and a 3-run bomb for Marlon Byrd. The Rays go through 6 pitchers in the inning, four of which can't even retire a batter.

To sum it up, after the first two men go down with ease the Rangers get 18 straight baserunners and score 16 runs before finally getting the third out. Those 16 runs would fall one short of the AL record of 17 for runs in one inning. The 21 men to come to the plate falls two short of the major league record of 23. Both the 17 runs in one inning and the 23 batters records are held by the Red Sox from a game back in 1953. I haven't been able to find out what the record for consecutive baserunners is, but if you find out let me know.

Left fielder Marlon Byrd hit a homerun and had 4 RBI as the Tampa Bay Rays
were badly beaten by the Texas Rangers, 18 to 7.

Byrd provided much of the offense. He doubled which scored a run in the 8th
inning and belted a three-run homer (his 3rd of the season) in the 8th
inning. Texas kept the scorekeepers busy in the 8th inning when they had 16
runs on 10 hits. Texas rapped out 14 hits for the night.

Jamey Wright(3-0) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the victory. The losing
pitcher was Dan Wheeler(2-2) in relief. He was unable to retire a batter
allowing 2 hits and 1 walk.
