The Red Sox get shutout for the third time this season with Matt Garza, Al Reyes and Jason Hammell combining on the goose egg for the Rays. Justin Masterson of the Sox, just called up from Pawtucket with Big Papi going on the DL, pitches well enough for the win but suffers his first major league loss for two reasons. One being the lack of run support since you can't win a game when your teammates don't score any runs behind you, the other being two mistake pitches resulting in solo homeruns for both Gabe Gross and Cliff Floyd.

Matt Garza(6-1) and Justin Masterson(1-1) treated the Boston fans to a fine
pitching duel at Fenway Park.  The Tampa Bay Rays eventually emerged as
victors over the Boston Red Sox by the score of 4 to 0.
 
Boston was unable to recover after Tampa Bay went ahead in the 2nd inning
scoring one runner.  After two outs Cliff Floyd hit a bases-empty home run
(his 3rd of the season).  That was all the runs Garza needed.  Both teams
finished the game with 6 hits.  
 
Garza got relief help from Jason Hammel who gained credit for his 1st save.
Tampa Bay now has a record of 36-22.  With the loss Boston now has a record
of 34-27.
