June 5, 2008 Astros 16, Pirates 2

The Astros destroy the Pirates as Pete Maholm joins Brian Bannister of the Royals as the only two pitchers so far on the year to allow double digits in runs.

The only reason why I show you this is because even though the Nationals are bad, the Pirates are worse. Maybe by only 1/2 of a game right now in the standings, but recently the Pirates have had a horrid streak. In this three game series against the "Stros they lost all three games by scores of 13-0, 3-0 and 16-2 for a combined 32-2!! Only winning five of their last 24 games hasn't helped either. Luckilly the Nats won today, or else they would still be the worst team.

Hunter Pence slammed 2 homeruns as the Houston Astros destroyed the Pittsburgh
Pirates by a score of 16 to 2 at PNC Park.

Pence was unconscious all evening. The Pittsburgh fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering base hits! He
delivered a single in the 1st inning, launched a Grand Slam homerun in the
4th inning, laced a one-base hit bringing in a run in the 6th inning and
bombed a two-run dinger (his 9th of the season) in the 7th inning. Houston
lit up the scoreboard in the 4th inning scoring 4 runs, the 6th inning when
they had 5 runs on 7 hits and the 7th inning which saw them plate 4 runs on 6
hits. Houston had 19 hits overall, while Pittsburgh had 4.

The win went to Brandon Backe(4-5) who allowed 2 runs in 7 and 1/3 innings.
Paul Maholm(2-7) suffered the loss. He allowed Houston 10 runs in 5 and 1/3
innings of work.

'I had good swings tonight,' Pence said, 'Everything felt right'.
