| Two men account for most of the scoring today, Raul Ibanez and Dustin Pedroia, in a gift victory that the Sox had literally given to them by J. J. Putz. The Sox win the game in the bottom of the 9th on ---- a wild pitch!!! More on that later. Sox starter Justin Masterson is dominant in the beginning, retiring the first 13 batters to face him before allowing a hit. However, after the Sox bust out to a 3-0 lead Masterson gives the Mariners 3 run back in the 6th for a tie. Ibanez and Pedroia are a big part of that scoring, with a 2-run homer for Ibanez and a 2-run double for Pedroia. Both continue to sizzle for the remainder of the game, with Ibanez cracking another 2-run blast off of Hideki Okajima in the 8th which gives Seattle the lead. Pedroia hits an RBI double in the 7th for a 4-3 Sox lead at the time, and another RBI double in the crazy Sox 9th. Overall for the day, Ibanez goes 2 for 4 with 2 homers and 4 RBI, while Pedroia is 3 for 5 with 3 doubles and 4 RBI. 8 of the 10 RBI in the game are for either Ibanez or Pedroia. Oh yeah, that's right the crazy 9th inning and the reason why 11 runs only have 10 RBIs. Heading into the bottom of the 9th the Sox trailed 5-4 with Seattle stopper J. J. Putz, with his 0.92 ERA, on the mound. Then, this happens: *** BOTTOM OF INNING 9 *** SUBSTITUTE P - J.J. In a thrilling finish the Boston Red Sox won in dramatic fashion coming back
to beat the Seattle Mariners by the count of 6 to 5.
Boston erupted with the game winning runs in the 9th inning with 2 runs using
2 hits. After an out was recorded, Julio Lugo opened up the rally as he
doubled. J.J. Putz then unleashed a wild pitch. Dustin Pedroia then
doubled. J.D. Drew followed and he reached on an error. Manny Ramirez got
his turn next, but he was a strikeout victim. Putz then was wild with a
pitch. Boston finished with 10 hits while Seattle ended up with 6.
Mike Timlin(3-1) went 1 inning allowing no runs for the victory. Putz(3-1) was
charged with the loss in relief. He pitched 2/3 of an inning and surrendered
2 hits and no walks.
Timlin and Pedroia were really whooping it up in the clubhouse after the great
come from behind victory. As Terry Francona noted, 'A win like this one can
do wonders for a team's attitude.' Everyone shares in the joy - the fans, the
players - even you guys - it's better than winning by a dozen runs!'
