| Probably the first time I have blogged two games on the same calendar day with a night's sleep in between, as the prior game I blogged at about 12:30 AM. I needed that nights sleep for this one, a very sloppy game for the Phillies both on the mound and in the field. The Reds scored in 7 different innings, plus get two runs given to them when Geoff Jenkins overthrows home trying to get a runner at the plate in the 9th inning to add to the agony. One good thing though - Ryan Howard smoked a 2-run homerun to put teammates on top of the NL homer race, as both him and Chase Utley have 20 homeruns. The major league leader is the Rangers' Josh Hamilton who has 22. Note of interest - today was the battle of the younguns on the mound with the 22 year old Homer Bailey of the Reds battling 24 year old Phillie Cole Hamels. Combine the two, they would be one year older than Phillie Jamie Moyer! In fact, Homer Bailey was only a month and a half old when Moyer made his major league debut in 1986. |

WEB GEMS- Bot 7th: Ken Griffey Jr robbed Jimmy Rollins of an extra base hit.
Joey Votto smashed 2 homeruns and had 3 RBI at Citizen's Bank Park as the
Cincinnati Reds beat the Philadelphia Phillies by the count of 9 to 4.
Votto was unconscious all day. The Philadelphia fans hated to see him
approaching the batter's box as he just kept delivering base hits! He ripped
a solo home run in the 2nd inning, blasted a solo shot (his 7th of the
season) in the 4th inning, doubled in the 6th inning, lashed a single in the
8th inning and lined a one-base hit scoring a run in the 9th inning. The
Cincinnati offense poured it on, scoring in 7 of the 9 innings.
Homer Bailey(1-0) was the winner allowing 4 runs in 6 innings. Bailey got help
from Francisco Cordero who was credited with his 14th save. The losing
pitcher was Cole Hamels(4-5). He pitched 6 and 2/3 innings allowing 8 hits
and 2 walks.
'I had good swings today,' Votto said, 'Everything felt right'.
