June 4, 2008 Rays 6, Red Sox 5

This is the one that got away. The Red Sox were in control from the get-go with a 4-run 2nd inning and a 5-1 lead after 6. Then, it fell apart. Tampa scored 5 runs on only three hits in the top of the 7th off of 3 Sox pitchers to take the lead that holds up.

A brief summary of that 7th inning disaster: Josh Beckett runs out of gas after getting the first out allowing two singles. David Aardsma takes the mound and does nothing, walking all three batters he faced which allows two runs to walk across the plate. Needless to say, that ends Aardsma's day and reliable Manny Declarmen takes the hill. Declarmen allows a single to score a run, walks two for two more crossing the plate, Jason Bartlett tries a squeeze which failed for out number two, and a groundout ends the inning. The Sox do nothing against JP Howell in the 9th as with the 1-2-3 batters due up Howell whiffs Ellsbury, Drew and Manny with a walk to Pedroia squeezed in there for the save.

Interesting note on Jason Bartlett - after the failed squeeze in the 7th, he tries another squeeze in the 9th which also failed. Two failed squeezes in one game, that can't happen too often. I don't even get one squeeze in a game at all, never mind two.
