August 3, 2008 Cardinals 6, Phillies 1

St. Louis averts a sweep by knocking around Brett Myers, as seven pitches into the ballgame the Phillies already trailed 3-0 via doubles by Skip Schumaker and Joe Mather along with an Albert Pujols 2-run dinger. Six doubles for the Cardinals along with the Pujols homerun for seven of their 13 hits going for extra bases. J.A. Happ stops the bleeding with 4 scoreless innings of relief, but unfourtunately the Philly offense sputters against Todd Wellemeyer getting only five hits as Wellemeyer goes the distance.

And don;t look now, but the Washington Nationals are one of the hottest teams in the league!! A 4-3, 10 inning win over the Reds today allows the Nationals to take two of three from Cincy, and along with taking two of three from the Phillies the previous series gives them two consecutive series wins for the first time this season! It doesn't anywhere even remotely come close to making up for their 3-22 slide (including a 14 game losing streak) immediately preceding the last two series, but for the 40 game below .500 team Nats any kind of winning streak is a good thing.

Todd Wellemeyer came through with a solid 9 innings and Skip Schumaker had 2
base hits at Busch Stadium where the St. Louis Cardinals beat the
Philadelphia Phillies 6 to 1.

St. Louis jumped out to the early lead in the first inning with 3 runs
utilizing 4 base hits. Schumaker kicked off the action when he doubled. Joe
Mather came next and he doubled. Albert Pujols then lifted one out of the
park for a two run home run. Two outs later Yadier Molina stepped up to the
plate and he doubled. Aaron Miles struck out, unable to help the rally.
That was all the offense they were to need. St. Louis finished with 13 hits
in the victory.

The win went to Wellemeyer(11-7) who allowed 1 run in the game. The loss was
charged to Brett Myers(7-8). He was knocked around, surrendering 5 runs in 2
innings.

'Wellemeyer took our guys to school' Gary Lucas said. 'Too bad he doesn't
pitch for us - it would make my job a whole lot easier!'
