August 3, 2008 Red Sox 9, Athletics 2

The recent 4-10 slump for the Red Sox combined with Tampa Bay winning 7 of their last 9 has knocked the Sox lead in the wild card race down to 2 games over the Rays. I guess the boys in Beantown notice that, and everyone but Mike Lowell gets in on the act today. Jason Bay gets his first Sox hit and homerun on the same pitch, David Ortiz hit his first homerun since his return, and Daisuke Matsuzaka goes 8 inning striking out 9 with only one run allowed for his team-leading 11th win for the year. A fairly close 4-1 Sox leadis busted open with a 5-run 8th inning courtesy of a Jed Lowrie double, Jason Varitek single, a 2-run standup triple for Coco crisp, RBI single for jacoby Ellsbury and Dustin Pedroia ripping one over the fence for a 2-run shot - all before getting an out in the 8th. That negate the save opportunity, so Chris Smith goes an uneventful 9th except for a Frank Thomas homer.

One note of interest in the game - there was one unearned run for Oakland and one error. Normally that unearned run would occur because of the error, but not this time. Now with an error not causing it and no passed balls or anything like that, what would you may ask? Closer inspection of the box score reveals this, just above the web gems - CATCHERS INTERFERENCE - Lowrie. Good ol' Jed reached first on the interference, a Coco double send him to third and Ellsbury brings him home on a single for the unearned, error less run. That might be only the third or fourth time that I can recall where I have had an interference call in a manually played game, and two have been this season as the Phillies had one earlier in the year. They are fairly rare in real life anyway.
