| Nationals rookie Colin Balestar does his part only allowing a Jimmy Rollins homerun before being pinch-hit for in the 7th, but Brett Myers was in control and up until the bottom of the 8th the Phillies led 1-0. Myers, at only a little over 90 pitches at that point, hopes for the shutout to give the bullpen a day off but the Nats finally get to him in the bottom of the 8th when Myers walks Christan Guzman, Willie Harris rips a triple to score Guzman to tie the game, and Ronnie Belliard raps a base knock to score Harris from third to quickly turn the 1-0 Phils lead to a 2-1 Washington lead, which is the final. Balester gets no decision to show for his fine start since the go-ahead run scored after he was already out. Luis Ayala gets the relief win, and Joel Hanrahan takes the 9th inning for his 9th save. Myers gets the loss, despite allowing two earned runs or less for his fifth straight start.. Myers over the last five - a 2.38 ERA, but only 2-2 with one no decision. |

One run was the difference at Nationals Park as the Washington Nationals
defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 2 to 1.
Washington scored the decisive runs in a big bottom of the 8th inning scoring
2 runs using 2 hits. After an out was recorded, Cristian Guzman opened up
the rally as he drew a walk. Willie Harris was next and he tripled. Ronnie
Belliard then slapped a single. Philadelphia had a chance to come back in
the 9th but they came up short.
Luis Ayala(2-0) went 2 innings allowing no runs for the win. Ayala got help
from Joel Hanrahan who was credited with his 9th save. Brett Myers(7-7)
suffered the loss.
'We won because we did the little things right.' Manny Acta said after the
game. 'This is why we practice things over and over and over, so when we get
in close games we don't make mistakes.'
