July 31, 2008 Phillies 3, Nationals 1

Not much offense again today from the Phillies, but the pitching holds up even with Kyle Kendrick on the mound and Kendrick gets the win. The Nationals score first in the 3rd on a Ronnie Belliard double and Willie Harris single, and the Phils get that run right back in the top of the 4th on a Shane Victorino homer. Two runs come scross in the top of the 6th for the Phillies after two are out via Utley reaching on a error by e68 (!) shortstop Pete Orr, Utley steals second, Ryan Howard is intentionally walked, Pat Burrell singles to load the bases, and Jayson Werth knocks Utley and Howard home on a 2-run single. Kendrick tires in the 6th when he allows singles to Harris and Lastings Milledge and walks Ryan Zimmerman to load the bases with no outs, and Rudy Seanez puts out the fire by striking out Austin Kearns and Jesus Flores and getting Kory Castro to pop out. Neither team seriously threatened after that.

The Phillies won't get a chance to see Jason Bergmann, who is still looking for his first win, as Bergmann will get the start in the Nats next game. Bergmann sits 0-11 right now, dangerously close to Terry Felton's 0-13. I doubt that Bergmann will go winless the entire season, but you never know. He does play for the Nationals after all. Some other interesting shitty pitchers of recent vintage - Mike Parrott of the 1980 Mariners was 1-16 (the one win was opening day!), Kyle Abbott of the 1992 Phillies (started 0-11 and finished 1-14), Anthony Young of the 1992 and 93 Mets (2-14 and 1-16 with a record 27 game losing streak) and of course the two most recent 20 game losers the infamous Brian Kingman of the 1980 A's (8-20) and Mike Maroth from the 2003 Tigers (9-21).

In a game for the baseball purist, Kyle Kendrick(4-11) and John Lannan(5-10)
squared off in a tense pitching duel, Philadelphia Phillies finally emerged
victorious over hopeless Washington Nationals, 3 to 1.

Kendrick gave a fine effort for Philadelphia. He went 5 innings allowing 5
hits and 1 walk. Washington was retired without difficulty in the bottom of
the 9th.

Brad Lidge got the save, his 22nd.
