August 2, 2008 Phillies 5, Cardinals 2 (10)

They were outhit by the Cards 12-10, but four doubleplays turned along with Pat Burell throwing out two runners at home enable the Phillies to win their third straight. The first inning saw most of the scoring with 2 runs in the Phillie half (Jimmy Rollins walk, Shane Victorino single, Chase Utley sac fly and Ryan Howard RBI double) and St. Louis gets one back in the bottom of the first on doubles for Joe Mather and Ryan Ludwick. In the Cards 7th, they do get a run to tie the game and load the bases and when Ludwick flies out to Burrell he nails Skip Schumaker at home to end the inning and preserve the tie.

In the Cardinals 8th they try to take the lead again when Troy Glaus singles, steals second and tries to score on Yadier Molina's single but Burrell whips it home and nails Glaus for the second runner thrown out in as many innings. Burrell comes up big again in the 9th when he makes a catch at the wall off the bat of Schumaker for the third out for the third straight inning with a run-saving play. Not bad for a guy who is a 5 fielding rating and I sometimes replace on defense in the late innings.

In the top of the 10th, the Phillies put it away after Utley walks, Howard hits his third double of the day and Jayson Werth sends everyone home with a 3-run bomb over the wall. Brad Lidge had come into the game in the 9th to preserve the tie, and he just stays in for the 10th and gets the win.

WEB GEMS- Bot 7th: Chris Coste blocked the plate, saving a run!

The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in 10 innings by a
score of 5 to 2 at Busch Stadium.

The score was tied at 2 after nine. Philadelphia won the hard fought contest
in the 10th inning. Chase Utley led off and started the rally when he drew a
walk. Ryan Howard came to the plate and doubled. After an out was recorded,
Jayson Werth came to the plate and smacked a three-run homer. After another
out, Chris Coste dug into the batters box next, but he struck out. St. Louis
was retired without difficulty in the bottom of the 10th.

The win was credited to Brad Lidge(3-2) who went 2 innings allowing no runs.
The losing pitcher was Kyle McClellan(3-7) in relief. He pitched 1 and 2/3
