July 28, 2008 Red Sox 4, Angels 2

The defending SOM World Series champion Angels make a trip cross-country to Fenway, but they certainly haven't played like the defending champs so far this season, below the .500 mark basically all year until a recent 9-2 run has put them at the .500 mark. They were looking to go over .500 for the first time since early May, but Dice-K wasn't gonna let that happen. He is in control throughout, going 7 1/3 shutout innings only allowing 3 hits while striking out 7 to get his 10th win of the year. Mike Lowell and Jed Lowrie are the hitting stars, a Lowell solo homerun in the 4th and a 2-run single for Lowrie in the 6th give the Sox all the runs they need. The Angels do get two unearned runs thanks to a JD Drew error in the 8th, and Papelbon stops them right there in recording his 20th save.

Both starters, Dice-K and Jered Weaver, came into today within striking distance of the 100 K mark for the year. Weaver does hit 100 with seven whiffs, but Matsuzaka gets stopped at 98 with his 7 K.
