July 25, 2008 Braves 10, Phillies 4

After taking two of three from the wild card leading Mets and gaining a game on them in the wild card race (Phils are 9 back, Giants and Diamondbacks are 8 1/2 back), the Phillies get their chance to gain some ground on the division-leading and defending NL champion Atlanta Braves who are 1 1/2 games ahead of the Mets. But when I saw the pitching matchup I knew it might be a tall order today with the 3-10 Kyle Kendrick on the mound for the Phils and the 11-1 Jair Jurrjens going for the Braves. As I feared, it ended up just as I thought it would in a Philly loss. Jurrjens goes the distance to go to 12-1. while Kendrick sucks the joint out again allowing 8 runs in 3 innings and drops to 3-12 putting his ERA over the 6.00 mark. Mark Teixeira hits 2 homeruns for the Braves, and Pat Burell tosses in two long balls of his own in a losing cause for the Phils.

For Jurrjens, the four runs allowed is only the second time in 20 starts he has allowed more than three runs and his 12 wins is second in the NL (and majors) behind the 13 wins from Brandon Webb of Arizona and Johan Santana of the Mets. For Kendrick, it just continues a shitty season. After figuring out all the game scores, Kendrick only has cleared a 50 score four times in 21 starts, with today's score of 11 his worst of the year and the third time below 20. His 11 losses is 4th most in the NL behind Pittsburgh's Zach Duke (3-12), Aaron Cook of Colorado (6-12), and Greg Maddux from the Padres. Maddux's better days are obviously behind him as he leads the majors in losses with a record of 7-14. Former Phillie Vicente Padilla of Texas leads the AL in losses at 3-13.

Mark Teixeira blasted 2 homeruns and Jair Jurrjens allowed Bobby Cox to rest
his bullpen, tossing a complete game as the red-hot Atlanta Braves defeated
the Philadelphia Phillies 10 to 4 at Citizen's Bank Park.

Teixeira had a big day against Philadelphia. He blasted a solo shot in the
3rd inning, doubled in the 4th inning and smashed a solo-shot out of the park
in the 7th inning. Atlanta totaled 12 hits on the night.

The winning pitcher was Jurrjens(12-1) who allowed 4 runs for the game. Kyle
Kendrick(3-11) took the loss. He was touched for 8 hits and 2 walks in 3
innings.
