Felix Hernandez 3 homer game

Since I didn't see it when it happened, here is the box score for that game I was talking about in the Phillies blog that you will read after this one. Thanks to that freak homer-filled card, it enables Hernandez to go 3 for 4 with 3 homeruns and 7 RBI. After doing a little research, I found out that Hernandez would become only the second pitcher in history to hit three homeruns in one game, the other is Jim Tobin of the Braves in 1942 (they were still in Boston then) who hit 3 homers in a game against the Cubs. Interesting note on Tobin - he led the league in losses that year with a record of 12-21. In Tobin's case, it wasn't as much of a fluke as with Hernandez as he did hit 17 homeruns in his 9 year career.

With the 7 RBI for Hernandez, that falls two short of the record for a pitcher of 9 set by Tony Cloninger of the Braves in a game in 1966, their first year in Atlanta. Interesting how both the homer and RBI record for pitchers are for diferent pitchers on the same team in two different cities almost 25 years apart.

Felix Hernandez smacked 3 homeruns and had 7 RBI and he pitched a complete
game at Shea Stadium as the Seattle Mariners embarrassed the New York (NL)
Mets by the lopsided score of 12 to 2.

Hernandez enjoyed a great evening at the plate. He bombed a two-run dinger in
the 2nd inning, popped a two-run clout over the fence in the 4th inning and
clubbed a three-run home run in the 6th inning. Seattle dominated
offensively as they scored in 6 different innings.

The victory was credited to Hernandez(5-4) who went the distance, allowing 2
runs. Johan Santana(11-2) ended up with the loss. He allowed Seattle 6 runs
in 5 innings of work.

With this win, Seattle has a 32-44 record. They have been 6-4 lately. With
the loss New York (NL) now has a record of 46-29.
