| Quite an interesting lineup the A's throw out against lefty Jamie Moyer today, with the catcher hitting leadoff and the shortstop in the cleanup spot. Moyer doesn't have much trouble with them, only allowing one run through his 7 innings of work. Meanwhile, the Phillies can't get much going against future teammate Joe Blanton (he will be a Phillie on July 17th) and we have a 1-1 tie through 7. #3 hitter Jack Cust hits a 2-run homer off of Rudy Seanez in the bottom of the 8th to put the A's ahead, and Huston Street goes the 9th for the save. Some interesting stats for the A's: They have the worst batting average in the American League at .232, 16 points lower than the next lowest team, and to top that off only 28 stolen bases at almost the half way point of the season, which is the second fewest in the AL. But, they get just enough today to down the Phils. Bu tthe A's can feel a bit better with all that weak batting and running because of this: one team is actually worse than they are in both categories, the San Diego Padres. The Padres as a team are batting only .222 and have the grand total of 11 stolen bases! Seven caught stealing for San Diego mean that only 18 runners at almost the midway point of the season have even attempted to steal a base. That will even rival those Sox teams from the early 80s for pathetic running if the Pads continue like that. |
