| July starts the same way that June ended for Brandon Moss, as he duplicates yesterday's feat with another 3-run homerun that put the game away. Pretty much no chance at all for the Rays today, as Wake held them to three hits into the 8th inning but 6 walks forced the relief corps to help out to preserve the shutout. Mike Lowell muffs a grounder to allow a run to score in the 8th (unearned run charged to Wakefield) that would spoil the shutout. Javier Lopez and Craig Hansen finish up. A gargantuan effort on the mound for the Rays' Matt Garza. Garza stays in for 156 pitches and a complete game in the losing effort, but did hold the Red Sox scoreless the last four innings. The Red Sox continue to be the hottest team in baseball, winning their 9th straight game and 19th of their last 22, but still sit 3 1/2 back of Toronto in the division. They won't get a crack at the Blue Jays until August, and then two of the last 5 series of the season are home-and-home against the Jays. |

Tim Wakefield carried a no-hitter into the 6th inning as the seemingly
unstoppable Boston Red Sox outscored the Tampa Bay Rays 6 to
1.
Wakefield(8-4) gave a fine effort for Boston. He went 7 and 1/3 innings
allowing 3 hits and 6 walks lowering his ERA to 4.57. The right-handed
Wakefield lost his no-hit bid when Jason Bartlett singled with nobody out in
the 6th inning. Boston had 9 hits for the night while Tampa Bay had 3.
Matt Garza(6-3) was given the loss. He surrendered 6 runs and 9 hits in 9
innings.
