July 5, 2008 Red Sox 5, Yankees 2

It wasn't looking good when entering the top of the 9th the Yankees led 2-1 and Mariano Rivera on the mound, who had come into the game in the 8th to try for a 2 inning save. Rivera got through the 8th fine, but then the Sox get to him in the 9th when some timely hitting, some Rivera wildness, sloppy Yankee defense and a little bit of luck enable the Red Sox to bat around and score four runs in the top of the 9th. Papelbon gets the unexpected save attempt, and has no trouble for save number 17. The win goes to Manny Declarmen for his 6th win out of the pen. For Rivera, only his second blown save of the year.

Mike Lowell had 2 base hits as the Boston Red Sox staged a dramatic comeback
over the New York (AL) Yankees by a score of 5 to 2 at Yankee
Stadium.

Boston came through with the game-winning runs in the top of the 9th inning
when they scored 4 runs on 3 hits. The critical plate appearance was by Alex
Cora who helped quiet the crowd when he stroked a one-base hit which was good
for two runs. Manny Delcarmen(6-2) got help from Jonathan Papelbon who
pitched a perfect ninth and was credited with his 17th save.

Mariano Rivera(0-2) took the loss in relief. He gave up 4 runs in 2 innings
of work. 'We just kept swinging the bats and didn't give up,' Lowell said.
'If you just keep trying good things can happen!'
