July 9, 2008 Twins 5, Red Sox 3

One month ago on June 10th, the Red Sox sat in third place in the AL East 10 games behind the division-leading Blue Jays with the Rays in between the Sox and Jays. Since that time, the Sox have poured it on and coming into today have gone on a 22-4 run and passed Tampa for second and closed the gap to half a game behind Toronto. With a BlueJays loss today, a win for the Sox would put them in sole possession on first place for the first time this season and it looked possible with the 4-11 Livan Hernandez on the mound for Minnesota.

However, Sox starter Josh Beckett has his worst start since his first start of the season allowing 5 runs including a first inning 3-run homerun for Jason Kubel to drop the Sox into a 5-0 hole after 5 innings. They do finally get to Hernandez for 2 runs in the 6th and get one more run in the 8th inning, but it isn't enough and Beckett falls to 5-8 for the year and the Sox remain half a game back.

Pain in that 8th inning though, as Brandon Moss came to the plate with two outs and 2 runners on base, but on a ballpark homerun chance the split comes up a 20 for a long fly out instead of a game-leading 3 run homerun. Doesn't matter where you are and even on the moon a 20 split card ballpark homerun would have still been an out!
