July 9, 2008 Phillies 5, Cardinals 4

J. A. Happ does even better in his second start of the year than his first, pitching 7 shutout innings while Chase Utley goes to work. Utley becomes the first player to 30 homeruns, blasting his 30th in the 3rd inning for a solo shot for the first run of the game. Utley hits a 2-run single in the next inning, and adds another hit later in the game for a nice 3 for 4, 3 RBI day. It was almost all for naught, as the relief corps of Rudy Seanez, J. C. Romero and Ryan Madson let the Cardinals back into the game in the 8th when St. Louis scores 4 times to close a 5-0 Phillie lead to a run. Bad Lidge takes the 9th, and this time converts the save for his 18th and gives Happ his first major league victory.

Fourth straight win for the Phillies to tie their longest winning streak of the year as they finally get back to the .500 mark. Still a bit of a hill to climb as they sit 8 1/2 back of the first place Mets.

J.A. Happ pitched 7 strong innings and second baseman Chase Utley slammed a
homerun and had 3 RBI as the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the St. Louis
Cardinals by the score of 5 to 4 at Citizen's Bank Park.

St. Louis was unable to claim the lead after Philadelphia went ahead in the
3rd inning scoring a single run using 2 hits. Utley cracked a solo homerun
(his 30th of the season). After an out was recorded, Pat Burrell came up and
he slapped a base-hit. Jayson Werth then drew a walk. St. Louis threatened
in the 9th but their rally came up short.

Happ(1-0) was the winner allowing no runs in 7 innings. Brad Lidge gained
credit for his 18th save. Mark Mulder(0-1) took the loss. He got hit hard,
allowing 9 hits and 6 walks in 5 and 2/3 innings.
