July 8, 2008 Phillies 7, Cardinals 5 (10)

Taking a 5-3 lead into the 9th inning, Brad Lidge coughs it up when Ryan Ludwick hits a 2-run single to tie the game and send it to extra innings for the third Phillie extra inning game in the last four games. It doesn't last long, as in the bottom of the 10th after Chase Utley walks Ryan Howard gets back to his old self ripping one over the wall for the walk-off homerun for an exciting Phillie win. For Howard, only his second homerun in the last 15 games.

For Chase Utley, it continues his MVP-style season, currently 3rd in the voting with his .274 average, 29 homeruns (tied with Howard for the league lead) and 76 RBI. Aramis Ramirez of the Cubs leads the MVP voting (.316, 20 homers, league-leading 79 RBI) and Hanley Ramorez of the Marlins second (.316, 23 HR, 51 RBI). No Phillies on the Cy Young list, the leader is Johan Santana of the Mets (12-2, lead leading 1.74 ERA including a no-hitter) and second is Trevor Hoffman of the Padres (1-2, 2.50 ERA and NL leading 28 saves).

In a close game the Philadelphia Phillies got by the St. Louis Cardinals in 10
innings by the score of 7 to 5.

Both teams were tied at 5 runs apiece after nine innings. Philadelphia ended
up winning it in the 10th inning. After an out was recorded, Chase Utley
keyed the rally when he drew a walk. Ryan Howard was next and he lifted one
out of the park for a two run home run (his 29th of the season) giving
Philadelphia the win and sending the home town fans into a frenzy. This was
a game of many highs and lows for the home town fans, as the lead kept
changing - 5 times in all.

J.C. Romero(3-0) got the win allowing no runs in 1/3 of an inning. Brad
Thompson(3-1) was tagged with the loss in relief. He pitched 1 and 1/3
innings and surrendered 3 hits and 1 walk.
